The first Shogun was a military leader in Japan, born in the year 794 CE and he had a lot of authority. He was part of the Samurai, who followed orders from the Emperor.
Later, Samurai families became more powerful and started to run Japan. The Emperor became more like a symbol, also called a figurehead.
Japanese society had different classes of people. Each group, or class, helped the Shogun Empire work.
When the Western world tried to take control of other countries, including Israel, Japan decided to close its borders and not talk to other countries.
After some time, Western influence became strong in Japan. This caused a revolution, which means big changes, and Japan started to become more modern.
Even today, Japan keeps many of its ancient traditions and cultures. This is why Japan is a special place to visit in the modern world.

Watch the videos above and create a mind map in your workbook with key points about Shogunate Japan. A mind map is a simple drawing that helps you organise your ideas. You put your main idea in the middle of the page. Then, you draw lines and write other ideas or keywords connected to the main idea. You can add pictures or use different colours if you want. A mind map lets you see how ideas are linked all in one place. It's like making a picture of your thoughts to help you remember or work through something.
🏰 The word “shogunate” means the time when Japan was really controlled by a shogun, not the emperor.
⚔️ The “sengokujidai” was a time when there were lots of battles between powerful leaders called daimyo who wanted to become the shogun.
💥 In 1854, America made Japan open up to trading and new ideas. This ended the Tokugawa shogunate and changed Japan a lot.
