Starting with the class of 2023, students will need to meet the following requirements to graduate from Cuyahoga Falls High School. Our Counselors meet with each senior individually to review all course work, test scores and graduation seals.
State and Federal Testing Requirements
All students are required by Ohio Revised Code to take six end-of course assessments (or their equivalents such as an AP course): Algebra I, Geometry, ELA 2, Biology, American History, and American Government. ELA 1 was eliminated as a required assessment for cohort 2023 and beyond.
Ohio law outlines the course requirements all students must complete to earn a diploma. Cuyahoga Falls High School students must earn a minimum of 21 course units in specified subject areas.
To graduate, students must earn a "competency” score on the English Language Arts II (684 or higher) and Algebra I or Integrated Math I (684 or higher) end-of-course tests or complete other options. Students not earning competency scores on the first attempt must be offered appropriate remediation and supports and retake the relevant test at least once. In lieu of attaining competency scores on the state tests, students can choose between four other ways to demonstrate competency following remediation and second test attempts. See Ohio Revised Code section 3313.618(B)(1).
In addition to fulfilling curriculum requirements and meeting the competency requirements listed above, students also must show they are prepared for their next steps after high school. State law created 12 diploma seals for students to demonstrate academic, technical and professional readiness for careers, college, the military or self-sustaining professions. Each seal allows students to demonstrate knowledge and skills essential for future success in their chosen post-high school paths. Students will demonstrate readiness by earning at least two diploma seals, one of which must be state defined.
