Writing in 4th Grade

4th Grade Writing

Writing is broken down into many components. Writers are assessed for their ability to apply knowledge about grammar, mechanics, usage, and spelling as per the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS.

Writers are also assessed for their ability to write an expository and narrative composition, using a given prompt.

In the classroom, our learning is guided by the following standard components:

Grammar:

  • Understanding the parts of speech and sentence structure. Nouns, pronouns, verbs, helping/linking verbs adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions and their role/purpose in a sentence.
  • Sentence Structure includes knowledge about subject/predicates, simple/complex/compound sentences, and dependent/independent clauses, capitalization, and punctuation.

Mechanics:

  • Understanding the capitalization of proper nouns, capitalizing titles, sentences, and the Letter I.
  • Punctuation includes correctly using periods, question marks, exclamation marks, commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, and colons.

Revising/Editing:

  • Applying an understanding of how to correct errors in writing by revising and editing grammatical and mechanical mistakes.

Usage:

  • Correctly using homophones in context including words such as , they're/their/there, to/two/too, you're/your/affect/effect, who/whom, its/it's, then/than, lie/lay.

Essay Writing:

  • Expository essay is a genre of writing that includes writing about a non-fiction topic that utilizes a thesis statement and supporting reasons for a claim being made about a particular subject.

Narrative Writing:

  • Narrative writing is a genre of writing in which student write about personal experiences, utilizing descriptions and vivid word choices.

Spelling:

  • Students are expected to spell grade level appropriate words for 4th grade.
