"Star of the Week" Information

Each week throughout the year a child in our class will have an opportunity to be our "Star of the Week." When your child is chosen, they make a star which is displayed in the classroom for that week. Each child will come to the front of the class and present their star on the Monday of the week they are chosen. Even the most quiet and shy children love this opportunity!

When your child is chosen they will bring home a star tracer. Please use it to trace, cut out and decorate your child’s own star on a piece of poster board. You and your child may decorate the front and the back of the new star using their name, photos, stickers, glitter, or anything else that will help us get to know your child by telling about themselves and their favorite things. Please return BOTH the tracer and the star on the following Monday.

Language Arts

It is important that your child is able to identify all 26 letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase, and then the corresponding sounds as soon as possible. We also have 35 sight words that are a requirement in kindergarten (See resources tab). The children need to read these words without sounding them out.

In kindergarten, the children will be continually assessed to determine their independent reading level. The expectation is that they will be independently reading at a Level C by the end of the year. In October, any child that is already reading on a level C will begin taking home a reader every week to practice at home that is on their individual reading level. In January, all kindergarteners will bring home a reader weekly.

Math

Please practice counting to 120 with your child at home. It is okay to practice to 20, then 30, 40, etc. until they can count all the way to 120. The children will also be expected to count backwards from 20 by the end of the year and identify all numbers 1-20.
