Welcome to English IV AP Literature and Composition

Catalog Description:

English IV AP and H/AP covers the curriculum for the Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition course, which focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing about imaginative literature – fiction, poetry, and drama – from various time periods. Students will engage in close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature to deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure to readers. During the course, students will consider a work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as its use of figurative language, imagery, and symbolism. Writing assignments will include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays that require students to analyze and interpret literary works. The AP English Literature & Composition course aligns to an introductory college-level literature and writing curriculum, and students may take the AP English Literature Exam at the end of the course to earn college credit. .

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Prepare for the AP English Literature and Composition exam via practice materials geared towards the multiple choice and writing components.

2. Read, reflect, and respond critically to a variety of texts.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes.

4. Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution, following standard style guidelines in documenting sources.

5. Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose.

6. Use edited American English in academic essays.
