Writing

You may not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page. -Jodi Picoult

Language Arts consists of grammar, spelling, and writing.

  • Grammar: We practice a new skill each week. Students are introduced to the new skill through the study of a mentor sentence. They add the skill to their Grammar Notebook. They then practice the skill with hands-on activities, partner work, and individual work.
  • Spelling: Students are given 15 words every 2 weeks. Three of their words are identified as vocabulary high frequency words and 12 of their words follow a certain pattern. They do a variety of activities with their words in class. This helps them understand the spelling rules and to get ready for the spelling test. Spelling tests take place every other week.
  • Writing: Students begin the year writing personal narratives. We then move on to Expository writing. We also do research writing, persuasive writing, fiction writing, and poetry writing.
  • Writing STAAR Test: The Writing STAAR Test is April ???. It will consist of an expository essay and revising/editing questions.
