English IV Dual Credit (ENG 1301/1302) will cover nonfiction writing, and heavily focus on college writing. In this class students will earn both high school English credit, as well as college credit through Lone Star. Students will learn how to read literature for a deeper understanding through individual critical thinking, mastering textual analysis and critical reading to discover the underlying symbolism and meaning in a text. Students will also master writing skills using the MLA 8th edition for formatting. In addition, we will study APA, and CMA. They will write extensively both inside and outside of the classroom in order to convey meaning, perform comparisons, and convey author message.
According to Lone Star, 1302 is an intensive study and practice in the writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis is on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Students will focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis. In addition, 1302 is the intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. There is emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions.
