Curriculum

Reading:

  • The district uses the balanced literacy model
  • We will have reading workshop where students will receive a lesson and rotations for small group instruction and technology application
  • Students will read independently and advance reading levels I-M to be considered on grade level

Writing:

  • Cy Fair uses the writing workshop model where students are encouraged to write creatively based on their personal experiences
  • In second grade, students will explore personal narratives, friendly letters, reading responses, book reviews, informational texts, poetry, and procedural writing.

Grammar and Mechanics:

  • We will use Multisensory Grammar to learn nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, possessive nouns, complete sentences with proper capitalization, structure, and punctuation.
  • We will apply our grammar through direct instruction as well as embedded in our stories in the writing process.

Word Study:

  • We will master first and second semester high frequency words (HFW); found in your child's binder
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Spelling rules; please see the resources page for our Spellingcity link
  • Letters and Sounds

Integrated Social Studies:

  • We will integrate social studies into our Read Alouds and Reading and Writing content
  • We will cover the following topics: Citizenship, My America, Government, Geography, Our Environment, Community, and Economics

Power Hour

This year your child will be able to discover & develop their passion through a time we have designated as "Genius Hour" or "Power Hour."
