Science Fair Project
Student designs and performs a SCIENCE INVESTIGATION using the Scientific Method in one of the following areas:
Physical Science (Matter and Energy)
Life Science
Earth and Space
The Scientific Method:
Ask a testable question.
Research the question.
Create a hypothesis.
Test the hypothesis with a clear & controlled procedure.
Collect and analyze the data.
Draw a conclusion!
Engineering Project
Student SOLVES a PROBLEM using the Engineering Design Process
The Engineering Design Process:
Define the problem you want to solve.
Research the problem.
Brainstorm a solution.
Build or design the solution (could be a physical model, drawn model, working prototype, or process).
Test the solution to determine if it meets the criteria. Present the data.
Improve the solution.
Communicate your results!
The Scientific Method
State your question
What is the problem you want to solve?
Do background research
Formulate a hypothesis and identify variables
What do you think will happen?
Design experiment, establish procedure
Define your variables
Determine data to be collected
What materials are needed?
Test the hypothesis by doing an experiment
Observe
Collect data
Organize data
Analyze the results and draw conclusions
What did you learn?
The Engineering Design Process
Ask:
What’s the problem? What are the constraints?
Imagine:
Do background research and search the literature to see what already has been done
Brainstorm possible solutions and choose the best one
Plan:
Draw a diagram and make a list of materials needed
Create:
Follow the plan and test it
Improve:
Make the design better and test it
