We are very proud of the incredible orchestra program here at Blalack Middle School. As a 6th grader, your child can take Orchestra as one of their fun and exciting electives! In Orchestra, we offer the following instruments:
The violin is the smallest member of the string family. Because its strings are the shortest, it produces the highest sound. Violins can play sitting down or standing up because it’s played on the violinist’s left shoulder—even if you’re right-handed!
The viola is a super special and very important member of the orchestra. Because it is bigger than the violin, it has a lower, rich, chocolatey sound. It is held like the violin.
The cello plays even lower than the viola. To support it’s longer strings, it’s more than twice as big as the viola. Cellists always sit to play and rest the instrument against their bodies. The cello section of the orchestra makes a rich, warm sound.
The bass is the orchestra’s foundation. These big, deep instruments add weight to the orchestra’s sound. They are the largest of all the string instruments, and they play the lowest notes. Frequently, the instrument is taller than the person who plays it. The whole orchestra depends on the bass section, and we can always use some awesome bass players!
