Mapping

We start our first exploration module in Social Studies working together as a grade 5 and 6 crew. Mapping the surface of the Planet we have crashed on will be an important first step in ensuring our survival here. Tunolla is a unique world, but by looking at the historical maps of Earth and reviewing our understanding on how they function, we can better prepare ourselves for the long stay here.

Introduction

  1. Mapping Introduction - A slideshow looking at the various types and aspects of maps that we will study in this module

  2. Notes - Physical copy of notes for cadets to fill in

  3. Map of the World Assignment - a review assignment looking at the political boundaries of Earth

Cardinal and Intermediate Directions

Cadets will learn the basics of the Cardinal (North, East, South, West) and Intermediate (NE,SE,SW,NW) directions. Review of these concepts will be done through classroom challenges. PDF's and assignments are yet to be digitally recreated for this portion. *COMING SOON*

Latitude and Longitude

Students learn that as we have advanced our understanding of mapping we required a more precise measurement tool for determining where we were in the world. Using this system, we are able to accurately find locations around the Earth

1) Final Assignment - Page 1 and Page 2

2) Culminating Assignment is a Scavenger Hunt pitting the squadrons against one another! Find the clues and unscramble them to receive a fantastic prize

Map Scaling

A new concept to many this year, we look at how a map scale is used to show real distance measurements on a scaled map. We learn how to calculate scale and use it measure approximate distances within Alberta.

  1. Intro Document (Page 1 only)

  2. Mid-Lesson Assessment

  3. Alberta Mapping Assignment

6a. Planet Tunolla Mapping Assignment

Final Assignment

Cadets are tasked with becoming amateur cartographers as they map out the continents, oceans, and borders of Planet Tunolla. It is up to them to create an accurate depiction of the surface so that we can traverse this harsh landscape as safely as possible. A special badge will be awarded to those that show the most attention and care that may give them an advantage in the future. What will you create?
