History Fair

Sponsors: Shadi Frick, Spenser Morgan

Purpose:

The history fair program gives students the opportunity to do upper-level research on important historical topics, then do a competitive presentation (projects, performances and displays) on those topics. The topics are determined yearly by the National History Day organization, and at the state level, generally at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and if scored high, become eligible to compete at the state and national level.

Currently, there are 1o students in the program researching and preparing materials for competitive presentations. The regional History Fair Competition will be held March 26, 2022. This year’s topic is Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures and Consequences.

Art Club

Sponsor: Megan Batteau

What we are:

Carbondale Middle School Art Club is a club open to anyone who likes to make art and be with others who like art. There is no cut off for joining any middle school schooler who would like to join throughout the school year.

What we do:

During our meetings we do any number of things. Students have free time to be creative and make art they like. I teach lessons on topics students are interested in, and learn about famous artists and their work. Students will also work on pieces for a spring art show that will be open to any CMS student.

Math Counts

Sponsor: Ashley Burgener

What we do:

MatchCounts practices every Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for the chapter competition on February 17, 2022. State competition data has yet to be established.

Yearbook

Sponsor: Korey McCormick

Who we are and what we do:

Yearbook club is an organization developed to create and design the yearbook. Students in the yearbook club work to improve their skills and then apply them to the yearbook. It requires time outside of class and school to take pictures and work on copying or editing at deadline time. It becomes a daily practice of journalism skills to stay ahead of the action and be prepared for upcoming events.

In Yearbook Club, we will actually design, promote, and sell the current yearbook. Assisted by teachers, students will use an online computer program to create pages and will also be primarily responsible for taking the pictures that will end up in the yearbook. Our main goals will be to capture the atmosphere here at CMS and include every student’s picture in the book.

The students who are members create a yearbook that represents the uniqueness of our school. Members design a picture page for each class. They also create montage pages for the different school-wide events that happen throughout the school year.

The club is open to any CMS student (in good standing; passing grades in all classes and no referrals) who is interested in helping to create Carbondale Middle School’s annual yearbook. Being a member is a huge responsibility, but by the end of the year students have produced a piece of history valued by students, staff, and the community.
