Class Descriptions:

ENGLISH 7:

In English 7, we will focus on developing skills such as reading, writing, analysis, communication, vocabulary, research, and other language skills, all of which students will use in future English classes and other subject areas. The majority of our work will be centered around reading a variety of literature types and writing for creative, reflective, analytical, and persuasive purposes. Vocabulary work and journaling will be frequently mixed in our activities. We will be spending time in Amplify ELA throughout the year, as well as a variety of other materials outside of Amplify ELA.

ENGLISH 8:

In English 8, we will focus on the continued development of skills such as reading, writing, analysis, communication, vocabulary, research, and other language skills, all of which students will use in future English classes and other subject areas. The majority of our work will be centered around reading a variety of literature types and writing for creative, reflective, analytical, and persuasive purposes. Vocabulary work, grammar improvement and journaling will be frequently mixed in our activities. We will frequently utilize Amplify ELA throughout the year, as well as a variety of other materials outside of Amplify ELA.


READING 8:

Reading 8 is a course focusing on learning and practicing the many skills that good readers use to gain meaning from both fiction and nonfiction text. The course will build upon and extend the reading skills learned in 7th grade. Becoming a better reader will help students become better learners in all areas of their education and throughout life. Students will do a variety of reading and responding with special emphasis on developing the skills of communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. Throughout the course, we will focus on novel studies, work tied to the novels we study, and independent book studies.

JOURNALISM:

Journalism is an elective course that students will learn the fundamentals of print and online newspaper/newsletter production. Journalism students will be given the opportunity to create and produce content for the Shelton Clipper and our very own Centurion Times newsletter/newspaper.
