Regie Routman (2003) has written that "One of the strongest predictors of reading achievement is the quality of the teacher-student relationship. In reading conferences, you give a student or group of students your undivided attention and develop strong relationships with them." In this session, you will discover how to begin the year by building relationships with your readers and writers through conferring.

Which sight words should we teach our students? Are there instructional methods that can have a greater impact than others? How do we ensure students are able to transfer newly learned words into their independent reading and writing? This session will uncover how we can shift from a “just-have-to-memorize-them” approach to highly effective instructional routines rooted in the science of how the brain learns to read.

When teachers have a deep understanding of what students must know and be able to do, the rate of student learning can double (Hattie, 2012). Teacher clarity answers the questions, what am I learning? (learning intentions), why am I learning? (relevance) and how will I know I have learned it? (success criteria). As clarity increases students are empowered to take ownership over their learning. In this session, participants will learn about each component of teacher clarity: learning intentions, relevance, and success criteria. Participants will come away with a process of how to establish clarity in their role.

This session will highlight three high-impact strategies that work, and more importantly when they work. Participants will explore how students move from surface learning, to deep learning and transfer. Annotations are effective, but when? When is reciprocal teaching best implemented? When should classroom discussion be leveraged? This session will align three strategies to each phase of learning.
