Course Goals
Speak for a variety of purposes

Course Objectives
First Quarter:
Determine a theme/central idea, analyze interactions of complex characters and how they advance the plot or develop the theme.
Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums.
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text.
Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support what is said explicitly as well as inferences drawn.
Write informative/explanatory and argumentative texts.
Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.
Determine the effectiveness of word choice on author’s purpose.
Determine an author’s point of view or purpose and analyze how he/she uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.
Demonstrate an understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, where style is appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.
Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English.
Second Quarter:
Conduct independent research using a variety of reliable information sources following MLA format.
Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work.
Demonstrate an understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, where style is appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.

Third Quarter:
Write informative/explanatory and argumentative texts.
Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.
Evaluate and analyze the use of suspense, foreshadowing, flashback, and pacing.
Analyze complex literary techniques throughout text.
Compare and contrast point of view, mood, and tone, between various characters within a single text.
Delineate between static/dynamic characters and flat/round characters and how they contribute to the development of theme and plot.
Analyze the relationship between literature and its historical period and culture.
Fourth Quarter:
Analyze seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance, including how they address related themes and concepts.
Evaluate the use of text features and how they impact the transfer of information and author’s purpose.
Analyze sound devices and figurative language in poetry.
Construct poetry using genre elements, including figurative language and sound devices.
Analyze the relationship between literature and its historical period and culture.
Compose a reflective paper that compares specific incidents and themes.
