SECTION 3: COUNSELING
SECTION 3: COUNSELING
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Central Catholic High School Counseling Department is to provide a comprehensive, data-driven, culturally responsive program that inspires and encourages students to become the best version of themselves.
Vision Statement:
Our comprehensive counseling program envisions that all students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to bring their unique gifts to serve the world. Our program develops students’ academic and social/emotional growth, as well as college and career readiness. In addition to our school’s character values, all students will cultivate a commitment to excellence, integrity and engagement, and unwavering compassion towards one another.
Students are assigned a school counselor at the beginning of their freshman year. To develop an ongoing relationship between student and counselor, as well as provide consistent support, students remain with the same counselor throughout their time at Central Catholic. Students may drop by the counseling center or email their counselor to set up an appointment. Similarly, teachers and parent(s) or guardian(s) can initiate referrals by contacting the counselor. As a part of our role as a college preparatory school, college counselors work with second-semester juniors and seniors to connect students to meaningful post-secondary options.
We understand that stress, anxiety, and other challenges are part of the human experience. At Central Catholic, we are committed to offering a rigorous education while helping students become the best versions of themselves. We view each student as capable and resilient. When students face difficulties, we approach them with deep care, empathy, and a strong belief in their ability to develop the necessary skills for a healthy, balanced, and confident life.
It is the goal of the Counseling Department to offer students a safe environment in which to discuss personal issues. In some instances, Oregon State Law (Oregon Revised Statutes 419B.005-419B.45) requires the Counseling Department and all school personnel to report specific incidents. Examples, as provided by Oregon State Law are:
Duty to report any behavior, suspicions, or student reports of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, abandonment, or neglect to the appropriate authority/agency;
Reporting information to persons outside the school when a student indicates that a crime involving the likelihood of significant personal injury or significant property loss will be or has been committed;
Reporting to one or more specific persons or agencies after a written release of information form has been signed by the student and parent(s) or guardian(s) and kept on file;
Disclosing information deemed to be confidential when ordered to do so by a court of law.
*Student statements of self-harm and or suicidal ideation will follow the Central Catholic Screening Process, be reported to parent(s) guardian(s), and the Principal within 24 hours.
Any request for a counselor change must be submitted to the Director of School Counseling. Only requests for a change that involve a significant negative experience or event with the assigned counselor will be considered. In an effort to facilitate better communication in these instances, we encourage students and parents and guardians to address their concerns with the counselor first.
If the Director of School Counseling determines that the request warrants consideration, the new counselor to be assigned is the decision of the Director of School Counseling and is not left up to the student or their family. Proposed changes must be discussed with both counselors involved and are not finalized until the request has been presented for final review.
At Central Catholic, college and post-secondary counseling is a personalized journey rooted in faith, self-awareness, and reflection. Our goal is to guide students through the discernment and application process with intention and care, whether pursuing college, a gap year, or another post-high school path. With the support of experienced counselors, students are empowered to explore options that align with their academic, social, financial, and spiritual goals. Grounded in Catholic tradition and a deep understanding of each student’s God-given strengths and values, we partner with students and families to navigate this important transition thoughtfully, faithfully, and together.
Central Catholic High School has a responsibility to honestly represent current and former students in their letters of recommendation to colleges. Additionally, Central Catholic is expected to report any significant incidents that resulted in suspension or dismissal related to academics or personal conduct to any post-secondary institution, employees and scholarship providers upon request. This includes but is not limited to incidents related to substantiated substance use or sexual misconduct.
