Number Sense Nebula

Designed for elementary teachers, Number Sense Nebula was created to help teachers find different strategies and/or ideas to promote mathematical thinking, reasoning, and understanding in their classrooms. It covers common misconceptions, number talks, manipulatives to build strong understanding of rational numbers and the base ten system and fact fluency. This course consists of discussions, creation of activities, and reflection in one's practices.

This course is designed to be done in sequential order. The introduction MUST be done first with no PD credit, and once completed, you MUST do the reflection discussion.

Modules:

  • Introduction: Tell us your "why."

  • Common Math Misconceptions-1 hr: We are going to explore 10 "tricks" or misconceptions we might tell our students. At some point each misconception expires. Instead, we want to give some alternative ideas of what you can say or do to help your students.

  • Number Talks-3 hrs: So, we've identified that many of our students lack number sense. What can we do about it? Number talks are great activities to incorporate in your classroom! What are they?

  • Building Number Sense within a Base Ten System-2 hrs: In this module, we will explore what the Base Ten System is and ways to build Number Sense within this system for our students.

  • Building Understanding of Rational Numbers-2 hrs:

      • In this module, we are going to focus on three questions to help us drive our instruction and lesson design:

        • Why do students struggle with rational numbers? How do teachers identify theses difficulties?

        • How can teachers best support students learning and understanding the algorithms we use when working with rational numbers?

        • How can we support students to make connections among the different representations of rational numbers?

  • The Importance of Fact Fluency-1 hr: In this last module, we will be exploring what fact fluency means and activities we can use in our classrooms to help support our students.
