Welcome Back!
Dear Parents and Carers,
Happy New Year. I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable winter break. It’s been wonderful to see the children back in school, full of energy and enthusiasm for the term ahead.
This week, our Year 5 children had an incredible experience with the Wonderdome Planetarium. They were truly captivated by the immersive exploration of space and it has sparked some fantastic discussions and questions from them.
Upper key stage two are having a busy start to the year it seems. Next week, Year 6 will be visiting the RAF Museum in Hendon as part of their History learning. This promises to be an exciting opportunity for them to delve into Britain’s aviation history and the role it played in shaping the world.
Since we have been back, you will have received two letters. The first was about improving communication between our school and your home. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us make this partnership as effective as possible. Please take a moment to complete the following survey: Survey . The second letter was to make parents/carers aware that we are consulting about reducing the school day by 10 minutes. This will keep us inline with the Department of Education’s expectation of a 32.5-hour school week as we have been operating beyond these hours. As per the letter, I would like to invite you to please share any feedback that you have by sending it to admin@central.herts.sch.
Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to a fantastic start to the term.
Kind regards
Mrs S. Wright
This week in Year 4, we’ve been buzzing with excitement as we explored new topics across our subjects. Here’s a peek into what we’ve been up to:
Science: Sparking Ideas with Circuits and Electricity
In science, we’ve been learning all about circuits and electricity. We started by discussing what electricity is and why it’s so important in our everyday lives. Then, we experimented with building simple circuits using batteries, wires, and bulbs. It was so exciting to see our circuits light up. We can’t wait to learn more about how electricity powers the world around us.
Maths: Shapes and Perimeters
In maths, we’ve been making shapes with matchsticks to find their perimeters. Working in teams, we arranged our matchsticks into triangles, squares, and even more complex shapes. Then, we measured the sides and added them up to calculate the perimeters. It was a great way to practice our measuring and adding skills while getting creative with geometry. Some of us even discovered patterns in the perimeters of certain shapes – mathematicians in the making.
English: Writing with Prepositional Phrases
Our English lessons this week focused on writing short narratives using prepositional phrases. We learned how these phrases can add detail and make our writing more vivid. For example, instead of saying, “The cat hid,” we wrote, “The cat hid under the wooden table whilst drinking its milk.” Everyone had the chance to write a short story filled with exciting adventures and descriptive details. We’re becoming master storytellers, one phrase at a time.
Spanish: What’s in Our Pencil Cases?
In Spanish, we’ve been learning how to talk about what’s in our pencil cases. We practiced saying words like "el lápiz" (pencil), "la goma" (eraser), and "el sacapuntas" (sharpener). Then, we used these new words to have mini conversations with our classmates. It’s amazing how much Spanish we’ve learned already, and we’re excited to keep building our vocabulary. ¡Olé!
What a fantastic week it’s been in Year 4. We’ve worked hard, learned a lot, and had so much fun along the way.

Mr Freeman
At Central Primary School, we recognise pro-social behaviours in Key Stage 2 by giving children ClassDojo points. Every half term, the classes decide on a collective target to earn a class reward. In addition, at the end of the half term, we hold a ClassDojo raffle, where the children can win some exciting prizes! How is your child(ren)'s class doing?
