Maths Blog
So far this year we have been working hard to develop our maths skills and understanding through exciting and practical mathematics lessons. At Central we aim to ignite curiosity in our children and develop their understanding of mathematical concepts through concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches. Our curriculum focuses on developing both mathematical fluency and problem solving; from Nursery through to year 6, we provide practical and engaging learning experiences that encourage reasoning skills and support a lifelong love of learning.
In Nursery, the children have been exploring numbers and learning to count forwards. They are using a range of representations to support their understanding.
In Reception, the children have been learning about repeating patterns. Isabella created her own AABB pattern independently during skills time.
In year 1 we have been exploring different ways to represent numbers. The children are able to use a range of manipulatives to represent numbers to 10 and beyond. We are now using this understanding to support problem solving related to addition and number bonds.
In year 2, they have been learning about comparing number sentences using vocabulary and symbols called greater than, less than and equal to. Concrete resources have supported to secure children's understanding and prove their answers.
In year 6, the children have been using multi-link cubes to support their understanding of square and cube numbers.
After half term, we will be hosting a parent coffee morning that will focus on the delivery of mathematics at Central. The morning will take place on Friday 24th November between 9-10am. We encourage as many parents/carers to attend as possible so that we can answer any questions you have surrounding the delivery of maths and strategies that we use for the four operations. We will also be talking about TTRockstars - a website that supports times tables recall. This is crucial for all children, particularly those in year 4 who will be sitting their Multiplication Tables Check in the summer term. Details of usernames and expectations surrounding this will follow shortly.

Mrs Bond's Book of the Week
Central's #HealthySelfie
This week's book recommendation is suitable for Early Years children.
Oh the places you will go!
By Dr.Seuss
A clever, rhyme filled book, adorned with beautiful illustrations of whimsical creatures and landscapes, this book provides lots of discussion opportunities about transitions and dreams and teaches the children skills of imagination, aspiration and perseverance.
This week's Healthy Selfie comes from Mrs Byrne who took part in the Ashridge Mud Pack Challenge at the weekend. She enjoyed over 30 fun and muddy obstacles whilst running the 7km and 14km route.
What are you doing to stay healthy and active?

Free Watford Museum Tour for Families
We're excited to invite families to the first Watford Museum on Tour event ‘Dig to Discover’, held at Cassiobury Park Hub on Thursday 26 October and Friday 27 October 2023, from 10am – 3pm. Families can join us on a unique and FREE archaeological adventure that promises to be a journey through time.
Here's what to expect:
Explore ancient treasures: get up close and personal with authentic archaeological specimens from Watford's past, including a rare Bronze-age Phoenician bowl.
Become an archaeologist in training: grab a brush, dig, and uncover hidden surprises buried beneath the sand. Who knows what treasures you might unearth? You'll even receive a badge once you've found the items.
Creativity extravaganza: we've prepared fun colouring activities for kids inspired by our bronze bowl.
Share your comments on the proposed designs for the new Watford Museum
Children of all ages are welcome, but parents/carers must supervise children at all times for their safety. No need to book but be aware that there may be a short wait for activities during busy times. Our friendly museum staff will be there to support you in your learning and discovery as this is a self-guided event.
This fantastic event is brought to you as part of our 'Watford Museum on Tour’, bringing Watford’s history to you, thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery Players.
Attendance at Central
ClassDojo in Key Stage Two
At Central Primary School, we take attendance and punctuality very seriously. We aim to have an attendance figure in excess of 96% . Our current attendance percentage is 93.4%.
I look forward to seeing this percentage rise over Autumn 2.
Please remember arriving on time for school is important because late arrivals will miss and also disrupt the learning already happening in class.
If you have concerns about or need support with your child's attendance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Mrs Guthrie
At Central Primary School, we recognise pro-social behaviours in Key Stage 2 by giving children ClassDojo points. Every half term, the classes decide on a collective target to earn a class reward. In addition, at the end of the half term, we hold a ClassDojo raffle, where the children can win some exciting prizes!
We have just reset the dojos. Watch this space next week...
1st place - Willow Class
2nd place - Oak Class
3rd place - Walnut Class
