We have had a very busy and exciting few weeks in Year 1. The children have settled beautifully into the second half of the autumn term and have been working incredibly hard across all areas of learning. It has been wonderful to see them growing in confidence, supporting one another and showing such enthusiasm each day.
In English, we have been focusing on writing full sentences, remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. The children have especially enjoyed exploring The Jolly Postman, using the story to inspire their own wonderful sentences and imaginative ideas. They have spent time thinking carefully about the different characters, the letters they write and the journeys our friendly postman might make. We have also looked at how stories are structured, helping the children build their own simple narratives and develop their creativity.
In Maths, we have been developing our skills in addition and subtraction. The children have been using practical equipment, drawings and number lines to solve problems and explain their thinking. They have worked both independently and in pairs, discussing their ideas and learning to choose the most efficient strategies. It has been lovely to see their confidence grow as they spot number patterns, use mathematical vocabulary and share their methods so clearly with the class.
In Science, we have been learning all about the seasons. We have discussed how the weather changes throughout the year, how the trees change and what we might see in our environment during autumn and winter. The children have enjoyed observing signs of the seasons around school, talking about changes in daylight and comparing the clothing we wear at different times of year. They have also shared their own experiences of seasonal celebrations and family traditions, which has helped deepen our discussions.
With the festive season fast approaching, we have begun preparing for our Christmas concert. The children have been working hard to learn their new songs, actions and performance routines, and the classroom has been filled with beautiful singing and excitement. They are very much looking forward to sharing their performance with you and we can already see how proud they are of their efforts.
We are incredibly proud of the children’s enthusiasm, effort and positive attitudes this term. They continue to amaze us with their curiosity and determination. We look forward to all the wonderful learning still to come as we move through the rest of the autumn term and into the new year.

Observers! Dreamers! Inventors! Explorers! The time has come to crown four new Protectors of Imagination Island. Do YOU have what it takes to win the Race?
Mario Kart meets The 13 Storey Treehouse in this thrilling new series from the author of The Christmas Carrolls.
The time has come for four children to be named the new Protectors of Imagination Island. Children all over the world scour the globe in search of lightstreams (portals) to the magical island where anything they imagine comes to life. To become a Protector, they must compete in teams and complete a series of challenges to prove they have what it takes.
Dreamy 10-year-old Luca is afraid of everything, not least the lightstream he stumbles into by accident. Imagination Island is everything that he’s terrified of. But there’s no way out. So he hits on a plan. Work out how to come LAST, and get sent home. That’s what he really wants. Isn’t it?
The Race is ON!
This is an adrenaline-filled rollercoaster ride of a story!
The story begins with a bang and the race is on to find sixteen ‘lightstreams’ hidden across the globe. When the lightstreams have been discovered, the finders transported to Imagination Island. There, we encounter larger-than-life characters with traits, strengths and weaknesses, who work with, and sometimes against, each other to save the island for generations to come.
The storyline is fast and furious with a hectic romp through puzzles and adventures. The family characters are well construed and Mel Taylor-Bessant paints a clear picture of shy Luca and each of his siblings. The appeal will sit well with years 3 and 4 while the language and some of the content are informal and strong in places, and the pace rarely lets up, perhaps leaning towards older readers too.
