In Pear Class we have already had a fantastic and busy half term filled with exciting learning across all areas of the curriculum.
Our Maths lessons have focused on addition and subtraction, where pupils have been practising strategies to solve number sentences that contain two two-digit numbers. The children have been building confidence with number bonds to 10, 20 and 100, and have applied their skills to a range of problem-solving and reasoning questions. Our focus has now turned to 2D and 3D shapes. In our lessons, we have been identifying, naming and describing shapes using key vocabulary, as well as exploring their properties through hands-on activities.
This year, a whole-school focus is handwriting. The children have been working hard to form letters correctly, using ascenders and descenders in their writing. Because of this, presentation in our books has improved greatly, and the children are happy to see the change from the beginning of Year 2 until now. We continue to work on joining letters in our writing.
In PE, the children have been taking part in calming and focused yoga sessions. During our lessons, we develop balance, strength and mindfulness through a variety of poses and breathing techniques. We have also been consolidating our ball skills by rolling, kicking and bouncing. We will use these skills throughout the year when we begin to practise and play team games.
During our Science lessons, we have been exploring life cycles and learning how animals, including humans, grow and change. The children have been working scientifically by investigating a range of enquiry questions and developing their curiosity and observation skills. We recently answered the question, “Are children in all year groups the same height?” To explore this, we invited children from each year group into our lesson and measured their height. From this, we were able to present our data in a graph and concluded that as children get older, they grow taller.
In History, the children have enjoyed learning about the significant individual Louis Braille. We have created timelines of important events in his life and compared life in the early 1800s to life now. Throughout the rest of the unit, children will discover how Louis Braille invented the Braille system and how his work continues to help people who are blind or visually impaired today.
Well done, Year 2, for your enthusiasm, persistence and hard work this term.
