2018-2019 2nd Grade Class

May 30th, 2019- The day my students get to present their Teacher for the Day lessons is one of my favorite days of the year! I knew this year's chatty class would not disappoint. It is so much fun when kids can learn from each other. Each student taught the class about a topic they are an expert in. We got to see lots of cool objects, souvenirs, photos, and videos. We all walked away knowing lots of cool facts about so many different things! Thanks so much to the parents that took the time to help prepare your students' lessons at home. I made a video to showcase their photos and a short quote from each lesson. Check it out! I am so very proud of them!

May 28th, 2019- The entire second grade class went on a field trip to the Nelson Pioneer Farm in Oskaloosa last week. Everyone had a blast! When we got back, all of the students wrote about their experience for our fourth quarter narrative writing piece. They did a great job! We have gotten so much better at remembering to add our punctuation and capital letters since the beginning of the year! We hope you enjoy reading about all of the things we learned and all of the fun we had on our field trip!

May 15th, 2019- Last week we read the story Yeh-Shen, which is a Chinese version of Cinderella. The students then read some more of their favorite fairy tales on Epic, a reading app that kids just love! We also learned about "fractured fairy tales" which are stories like The Three Ninja Pigs or Tell the Truth, B.B. Wolf that take a classic fairy tale and add a funny twist to it or change some of the details. The students worked on writing their own fractured fairy tales in their journals at their independent work time during literacy centers. I did not help them at all! A few students chose to share their stories on our class website. They recorded their voices while reading from their journals. Check them out below!

April 22nd, 2019- Happy Earth Day! Today during our extra math time, the students reviewed our addition/subtraction facts and created pixel art at the same time! Every time a student answered a math problem correctly, part of the picture was created. The pixel art was made using Google Sheets. We also discussed ways that we can use the words below to help our beautiful Earth.

April 15th, 2019- Last week we took our Iowa Assessments, so we tried to mix in some fun activities to balance all of the hard work we were putting in. One fun activity we did was called Easter Egg Scrambled Sentences. Inside each egg was a sentence scrambled up with one word on each slip of paper. The students worked as partner groups to unscramble and read their sentences correctly. If they finished before the other groups, they could stand up and dance to the music that was playing. Check out the photo slideshow below!

We also did a fun writing lesson called "6 Word Memoirs". This is a storytelling mission that challenges writers to share their personal stories in just six words. More information about this super cool trend can be found on www.sixwordmemoirs.com. Maybe try writing some at home as a family! The students' 6 Word Memoir writing pieces can be found below the slideshow. I was so impressed with their creativity!

April 12th, 2019- Our Journeys story last week was called From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons. We spent the week learning about how plants grow, including food like fruits and vegetables. This wasn't all new to us because we learn about fruits and vegetables every month with the Pick a Better Snack program! During the writing center, the second graders wrote in their journals about what they would like to grow in their own gardens. After editing, they typed their answers onto a template with Google Slides. Warning: Reading our writing below might make you hungry!

March 29th, 2019- Our vocabulary reader this week was called Clever Animals. We learned about how different animals like hippos and spiders used clever thinking to help them survive. We wanted to research to find out how other animals were clever. I assigned the groups different animals to research that were a part of the ZooKazam iPad app. This app uses Augmented Reality technology to bring the animal to life in the classroom. The students researched online, took notes, then put their information into paragraphs. They then read their paragraphs while they were recorded with their wild animals right in front of them!

March 20th, 2019- Our grammar skill of the week for our Journeys whole group reading was "homophones". Homophones are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. The students were assigned this homophone project using Google Classroom and Google Slides. They inserted images onto the Slides to help show what the different homophone words mean. They learned a lot during the process and were also able to teach their friends about homophones they may not have known about. Unfortunately, there are several students that weren't a part of this project because of all of the illnesses we have had this month.

February 15th, 2019- There hasn't been a project posted to our website in a while. It might have something to do with all of the snow days! During the past couple of weeks, we have been learning all about penguins! They are such interesting birds that do lots of cool things like tobogganing! Each of the students wrote their own penguin reports, adding facts without looking at books. These are all facts they had in their heads! After writing the reports with pencils and paper, we edited, then typed them onto Google Slides (and added cute pictures, of course)! Enjoy our COOL facts below!

December 18th, 2018- We learned about another new Google feature this week, Google Drawing! Each student was assigned a blank Christmas ornament through Google Classroom. They then were able to design a personalized ornament that would be placed on our digital class Christmas tree. They had the best time choosing their favorite fonts, colors, images, and more! Our tree turned out great!

December 7th, 2018- Mrs. Lind's Class wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We loved reading the book "The Christmas (S)Elfie Contest" by Rosie Greening. The book gave us the great idea of taking our own "elfies". Below is our 2018 Christmas e-card!

December 5th, 2018- Today we celebrated Computer Science Education Week with a building wide "Hour of Code"! Every student in Lakeview spent one hour of their day coding. Coding helps prepare students for so many careers, even careers that haven't been created yet! Below is a short video of some of the students during the Hour of Code. Here is a link to what they were using, in case your student wants to show you at home!

November 20th, 2018- Using Google Slides, we created a Turkey with 22 reasons that we are thankful! Ask your student which feather they added to the turkey. Have a great Thanksgiving!

November 19th, 2018- Today we read the awesome book, Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. It is a nonfiction picture book about Tony Sarg the puppeteer that created the first balloon floats for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. After reading the book and watching a few videos about the parade, we got into teams to create our very own balloon floats! We were able to practice using our engineering and art skills to design them. Enjoy our mini Thanksgiving parade!

November 15th, 2018- Our Journeys story this week was Click, Clack, Moo by Doreen Cronin. The students loved it! After reading the story, they each picked their favorite animal. They then wrote a pretend letter from that animal to Farmer Brown asking him for something, just like the cows did in the book. Afterwards, they each created a Google Slide with their letter, choosing a picture from the web to go with it! I put all of their slides into a video for you to watch and enjoy!

October 26th, 2018- Each of the morning reading groups have been practicing different Halloween themed readers theater scripts to perform. We decided it would be super cool to perform our plays in front of a green screen! We actually just used a green table cloth, and it worked great! The iPad app we used is called Do Ink. Green screen is an awesome type of technology that is used during weather forecasts and in movies. The groups worked together so well, choosing the backgrounds that would appear behind them. We worked on a ton of different skills in lots of different content areas throughout the entire process! Enjoy and Happy Halloween!

October 12th, 2018- Our "Boo! Guess Who?" projects were a fun way to get to know our classmates a little better. We wrote three facts about ourselves and even made a fun ghost craft to display in the hallway. The ghost crafts are featured in each video as well. The last step of our process was putting it all together in a presentation using the Shadow Puppet Edu app. Good luck guessing who each "ghost" is before they are revealed!

September 26th, 2018- We worked in groups to research owls, spiders, and bats. After researching their choice of animal, the students wrote a paragraph including an opening and closing sentence (using the hamburger paragraph template). Then came the fun part... using Adobe Spark Post to create posters! Read our informational posters below to learn lots of cool facts!
