Math 8: Scientific Notation Unit

1. Understand, rewrite, and use powers of 10 in multiple ways
   • Evaluate powers of 10 w/ positive, zero, or negative exponents.
   • Rewrite large numbers as products of 100, 1000, etc in factor form and using power of ten. ( 270000 = 2.7 x 100000 = 2.7 x 10^5)
   • Rewrite small numbers as products of 100, 1000, etc in factor form and using power of ten. ( .000027 = 2.7 x .00001 = 2.7 x 10^-5)

2. Understand, explain, and convert very large and very small numbers into scientific notation, as well as change them back into standard form.

• UNDERSTAND the number sense that if the number is larger than 1, then the scientific notation will contain a positive power of ten.
• UNDERSTAND the number sense that if the number is smaller than 1, then the scientific notation will contain a negative power of ten.

3. Multiply numbers in scientific notation using previous knowledge of commutative property and product rule for exponents. **Also understand real-world language that indicates multiplication.
