WHAT IS AN ECOSYsTEM?
An ecosystem is a community or group of living organisms that live and interact with each other in a specific environment.
An ecosystem also includes non living things such as water, rocks, soil, sand and the weather.
Grassland are ecosystems that are characterized by grasses and other herbaceous plants. Some of the animals that lives in there are: bison, prairie dogs, coyotes, many species of birds...
Ponds are small still water that are surrounded by land. In the ponds we can see living beings such as: algaes, mosquitos, frogs and toads.
A forest ecosystem is a large area of land that's covered in trees and other woody plants and filled with living animals such as: deers, wolves, foxes, owls...
A marine ecosystem are located inside of water. We can see animals such as: Sharks, whales, dolphins, seals, walrus, and many more come under this ecosystem.
The city is the place where most of human beings live. They organize in different neighborhoods, buildings, streets ...
ANIMALS
Animals are living beings that:
Eat other living beings. They can´t make their own food like plants.
Have special body parts for the 3 vital functions : nutrition, interaction, reproduction.
ANIMALS vital functionS
NUTRITION
Animals eat living beings to obtain nutrients. Their digestive system processes the food. Animals eat different things. We can divide them into three different types:
Herbivores eat plants. Carnivores eat other animals. Omnivores, ear plants and animals.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Animals breathe oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. Their respiratory system performs this function. Some animals breathe air through the lungs. Other animals breathe underwater through gills.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Animals have a circulatory system that distributes nutritional substances and oxygen around the body.
EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Animals use nutritional substances and oxygen, and produce waste. Their excretory system expels the waste.

Nutrition
Plants make their own food. They use sunlight, water, minerals and carbon dioxide.
ROOTS: absorb water and minerals from the ground. These substances travel up the stem to the leaves.
STEM: transport food through the plant.
LEAVES :use sunlight to turn the substances into food. This process is called photosynthesis. With this process they take carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
Interaction
Plants are fixed to the ground. THEY REACT TO CHANGES.
Plants detect temperature changes.
Carnivore plants notice when an insect lands on them.
Reproduction
Most plants reproduce using flowers. They produce fruit and seed.
FLOWERS: Most flowers have these parts:
Pistil, is the female part of the flower.
Stamens are the male part of the flower. They produce pollen.
The corolla has colourful leaves called petals.
The calyx has tiny green leaves called sepals (protect the flower).
FRUIT AND SEEDS: Plants need pollen from another flower to reproduce. When the pistil gets pollen, two things happen. The pistil changes into a fruit. Seeds form inside the fruit.
