The CEI MERIDIAN arts educators will facilitate hands-on workshops to teach highly differentiated music and visual art projects that directly teach literacy (ELA) and math. These projects serve a wide range of student learning levels within a heterogeneous classroom of students with IEPs (from students working towards the standards with cognitive challenges to students performing on grade level with emotional challenges).
Each day of the conference, teachers will learn both one music project and one visual art project that address the same academic skills and standards. Participants will have access to Meridian's easy-to-implement curriculum, which includes six curricular versions of every project to address the wide range of abilities of students.
CTLE credit will be available for New York State teachers
DAY 1: Thursday, June 26
Literacy (ELA) Through Music and Visual Art - ZOOM LINK
On Day 1, participants will learn highly differentiated music and visual art projects that directly teach reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing, and speaking and listening skills with a focus on the science topic of animal attributes of the elephant. They will learn and create two projects through the lens of their students. Projects include ELEPHANT SCULPTURES and MUSICAL ELEPHANT POEM.
Teachers have access to highly differentiated curricula and learn the Elephant Sculptures project that they can implement with their students. Students explore the elephant anatomy through books, videos, and discussions, which strengthens their literacy skills. They then create elephant sculptures using fine motor skills to manipulate, tear, bend, and sculpt materials. The project builds skills in reading, writing, vocabulary development, speaking, listening, observation, and scientific inquiry, while integrating visual art skills to create a sculpture of an elephant.
Teachers have access to highly differentiated curricula and learn the Musical Elephant Poem project that they can implement with their students. Students create a musical poem about an elephant using instruments they make, incorporating movement and sound to represent different body parts and functions. The project builds academic skills in listening, sequencing, descriptive language, vocabulary, and sentence development, while introducing musical concepts such as dynamics, tempo, pitch, and melody.
DAY 2: Friday, June 27
Math Through Music and Visual Art - ZOOM LINK
On Day 2, participants will learn to directly teach the K-2 geometry concepts of shape identification and matching, composite shapes, and partitioning. They will have access to all curricular materials and create two projects through the lens of their students. Projects include GEOMETRIC PATCHWORK QUILT and GEOMETRY ORCHESTRA.
Teachers have access to highly differentiated curricula and learn a Geometric Patchwork Quilt project that they can implement with their students. Students create collaborative paper quilts to explore shapes based on color and orientation. The project builds academic skills, including shape identification, spatial reasoning, and patterning, and introduces geometric concepts of composite shapes and partitioning. Students also develop fine motor and artistic skills by arranging, overlapping, and adhering materials, while exploring color theory, balance, symmetry, and overall design.
Teachers have access to highly differentiated curricula and learn the Geometry Orchestra project that they can implement with their students. Students design and build geometric-shaped instruments — such as square cymbals, triangle tambourines, and rectangle kalimbas —using craft materials. They explore concepts of shape, size, color, and composition, including composite and partitioned shapes. Students learn basic music skills like rhythm, tempo, and collaboration as they rehearse and perform a class composition using a geometric shape graphic score. The project supports academic growth in geometry, problem-solving, creative expression, and music performance.
