The 7th graders will be working through the Cyber Civics Year 1: Digital Citizenship curriculum. These lessons include explorations of what it means to be a ‘digital citizen,’ when and why to post on social media, how your online persona can affect or influence your in-person perception and reputation, and how to be an ‘upstander’ against cyber bullying and hate speech.
Cyber Civics recognizes and celebrates what it means to be a digital citizen in the global community available through the internet and social media. There is both privilege and responsibility inherent to safe and successful interactions on social media. As the students learn to be upstanding citizens in this new online community, they will also learn to recognize and even counteract the negative words and actions of others.
Cyber Civics Year 2: Information Literacy
In the 2024-25 school year, the 7th graders will be working with the Year 2: Information Literacy curriculum. This builds on themes from Year 1 of private vs. public information sharing, while also examining our "digital diets" and bringing in new knowledge of how to conduct effective online research. I am really excited to dive into conversations around who "owns" creative works once they are shared online, how search queries actually work once you type in the key words, and how students can incorporate the internet into their academic and social life as a tool for the benefit of themselves and those around them. It's going to be a great year!
