Role: You will be taking on the role of a cartographer and mapping the route of Lewis and Clark's great journey west.
Goal: Through the journey think about how this expedition will lead to further development of the United States.
Task: You will need to find the locations, pin the location, give a brief description of the location, and measure distance in Google Earth
Follow the instructions below to create your Google Earth map of Lewis and Clark's expedition
Create a new project by clicking +New
2. Create a "Drive Project"
3. In the Project Title box - type your full FIRST and LAST name
4. Use first page of this website to locate and pin important points on the trail
5. Start with Camp Wood, Illinois and end at Cape Disappointment, WA
NOTE: Not all locations will be found at the exact name listed on page one
Go to the link provided and look for a more exact location if necessary
6. Save the location to your project
Change your pin icon and color if you want
7. Describing your location using the information provided on the linked pages on page one
In the settings box, click on +Description
On your pinned location on your Google Earth project give a brief description of the location
Date that Lewis and Clark visited this site
What they saw and did there
Any other important information about the site
DO NOT just copy and paste from the web site!!!
8. Choose 8 other sites along the trail. The sites must be spread out among the eight states listed on the first page of this website. In other words all 8 sites cannot be located in one state.
9. Repeat steps above until you have 10 places pinned on your map
10. Draw your line to connect your pins
Use the draw a line tool
Connect all of you pins with a single continuous line
Click enter on final point to give your line a name and save
11. Zoom in and adjust your line points to be more exact to your pins as necessary
Preview your map
Your map will save automatically in your Google Drive
Get the SHARABLE link to submit into Canvas (DO NOT copy the URL at the top of the page!)
Click on the SHARE button in the upper right-hand corner and change to General access to "Central Dauphin School District"
Click "Copy Link" button
Click on "Submit Assignment" in Canvas
Paste the Sharable link
**REMEMBER TO ANSWER THE REFLECTIVE QUESTION!! Answer this Reflective Question AT THE END OF THE ACTIVITY!! Type your answer into the comment box on the Canvas submission page. “After pinning all of your locations on the map, how does creating the map and describing the locations help you better understand Lewis and Clark’s expedition?”
Click Submit
