The Gallbladder
The Gallbladder
The gallbladder is a small hollow organ responsible for the storage of bile. It is linked to the cystic duct that connects to the common hepatic duct from the liver and to the common bile duct towards the duodenum. The gallbladder also has an internal brush border of microvilli but interestingly does not have a muscularis mucosae. Its mucosa also has rugae and special Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses that are incredibly deep crypts that can be dangerous.
Bile is concentrated by 3-10x in the gallbladder through the removal of water and electrolytes (salts, sodium and chloride ions) by osmotic pressure.
