Aquatics
Being confident and competent in water is an important life skill for health, safety and enjoyment. At CDNIS we expect all students to take part in our aquatic based units of inquiry.
What students need to bring to swimming
Students should bring the following:
Appropriate swimwear
Goggles (not required for some units)
Swim Cap (available to buy from Aquatics office $30)
Towel
Water Bottle (optional)
Flip Flops for changing area (optional)
When students are unable to swim
Parents should send an email to their child’s teacher explaining the reasons for not being able to take part in aquatic activities.
If this is for an extended period of time (more than 3 lessons) a letter from a Hong Kong medical professional is also required.
Students who are unable to swim at all due to medical reasons will not be assessed in the Applying and Performing criteria. They will still be required to take part in lessons poolside and take other related assessments.
Students must wear their PE uniform as they will be learning poolside.
If students miss more than 2 lessons in the unit they will be required to attend a make up lesson outside of HPE class.
What students Learn when not able to swim
When a student is unable to take part physically, the learning does not stop.
Students will work with their swimming groups, analysing stroke technique, feedback, officiating and taking class notes for review at the end of the lesson.
Swimming in cold weather
The swimming pool area is temperature controlled throughout the year. The water temperature is kept at 29.5 – 30 degrees celsius and the air temperature is normally the same at 29 degrees celsius.
Swimming in the colder months is not a health risk to your child. The association of wet hair and cold air causing people to get sick is a common myth. Colds and flus are caused by a virus, not by hair being wet. A good fitting swim cap will keep hair mostly dry. Immune systems are not affected by water or cooler temperatures.
Therefore, we do not accept students not swimming due to it being cold outside.
