Sophie Barrera Coil Pot
10x10x15" Stoneware and Glass, 2025
(IDEA) My idea was to make a blue coil pot. It evolved by turning black in the kilm and it started out small but i made it bigger.
(PROCESS) The process was I made the coils then placed them on a slab. I kept adding coils one by one layering on top of each other. The materials i used were clay, water, rib to blend and a sponge.
(SYMBOLISM & ICONOGRAPHY) My artwork doesn't mean anything specific it has no symbolism but what I would like the audience to think about when seeing this is the coil technique
(ARTISTIC GROWTH) The most difficult thing for me was trying it make the coils straight on top of eachother and not pop out the side giving a uneven look. I overcame the struggle by blending a lot. What I would change if i started over would be picking a different glaze color.
(VISUAL VOICE) The style of art it is is non objective. What makes it unique to my own personal style is that it is black even tho that was not the color i was aiming for. What I like about it is the size, it is pretty big.
Sophie Barrera Mushroom Magnet
1x2x.5" Stoneware and Acrylic, 2025
(IDEA) My idea was to make a mushroom magnet. I got the idea because i think mushrooms look cool and i thought it would be easy to make. My idea evolved by starting off more plain then i added detail like the marks in stem and the colors.
(PROCESS) The tools i used were sponge, my hands and a wooden rib. The techniques i used were carving marks in the stem l and using my hands a lot to shape it the way i wanted.
(SYMBOLISM & ICONOGRAPHY) My artwork does not mean anything, it does not have any symbolism. What i want my audience to think about is mushrooms and nature.
(ARTISTIC GROWTH) The most diffucult thing was making the ribs. I overcame the struggle by redoing until i liked it. what i would change if i started over would be making the red spots smaller.
(VISUAL VOICE) The style of art this is is realistic. What makes it unique to my own style is that it is a mushroom and i think they are cool. What i like about it is the ribs in stem.
Sophie Barrera Blue Bowl
4x4x2"
(IDEA) My idea was to make a blue small bowl for holding jewlery. I got the idea because I needed a holder and I like blue. My idea envolved by starting off kinda rough and it did not look very good but it looked better once i smoothed and glazed it and tried to fix shape more evenly.
(PROCESS) The tools i used were a pottery wheel, my hands, sponge , rib tool, glaze and paint brush. The techniques i used were centering the clay, opening and pulling up walls to form the shape and using tools to refine shape.
(SYMBOLISM & ICONOGRAPHY) My artwork does not mean anything, it does not have any symbolism. What I would want viewers to think about when seeing it is wheel throwing.
(ARTISTIC GROWTH) The most diffucult part was shaping the clay. I overcame the struggle by trying my best and asking for help. What I would change if i started over would be using more glaze so the color is more seen.
(VISUAL VOICE) The style of art this is is realistic. what makes it unique to my own style is the color of it (blue) because i like blue a lot. What I like about it is how blue the inside is.
Sophie Barrera Green Bowl
4x4x2"
(IDEA) My idea was to make a green small bowl to hold little things. I got the idea because I needed a holder and I like the color green. My idea evolved by starting off kind of off centered and uneven but then I was able to fix it by shaping it more and using tools.
What I would change if i started over would be centering the clay better on wheel so it turn of more centered and even.
(VISUAL VOICE) The style of art this is is realistic. what makes it unique to my own style is the color of it (green) because i like that color. What I like about it is how the glaze came out good and you can really see the color.
