Sophomore Painting

Quin Kuehl "Sunset Flower"

8” x 10”, Acrilic, 2021

I got my idea for the flower because sunflower is my mom’s favorite flower. My mom and Aunt grow sunflowers and have a competition every year to see who can grow the bigger sunflower. I started blending pinks, reds, and whites into my background so I can get my desired background. I drew my sunflower over my background to get a rough idea of what I wanted. Then I painted my sunflower and put in finishing touches such as the seeds with a paint marker. I used paintbrushes, paint, and paint markers to create my piece. I want my audience to think about my mother when looking at my painting. I would have to say the most difficult challenge for me was mixing the correct colors of yellow. I went over some of the pedals with a yellow paint marker to give them more depth. I would change the size of my painting to be bigger. I love how I blended all of the colors.

Quin Kuehl "Captive Animal"

12” x 18”, Acrilic, 2021

Originally it was going to be a vase but I messed up a line. I thought this line looked like an octopus. So I decided to change gears and make it an octopus. I went to an aquarium once in Chicago and everything was amazing. Until we got to where the squad and octopus were and I got really sad because they looked really sad. I painted a green background to go with the vase. I drew the vase in and I messed up the vase and made it into an octopus. So I painted blue over green but left a little green for an algae type of look. This artwork means that captive animals need to be sent free. I want my audience to think about how they are captive and how sad it is. Animals should be wild and not kept in captivity. The most difficult part about this artwork is the blending of the tentacle. I overcame them by trying on a separate piece of paper so I know what to do heading into this painting. I love how my squid looks. I would change the shades of blue around the octopus.

Quin Kuehl "Landsape"

8” x 10”, Acrylic, 2021

I got my idea from a picture of the Rocky mountains. I once flew over the Rocky mountains before. I used to paint, and paint brushes. I did the background first. Then I did the mountains and detailed work last. I want my audience to think about the mountains and going outside and appreciating nature. The most difficult thing for me in this painting was making the sun since it was the last thing I did. I would change the color of the mountains. And put more color and detail in them.

Quin Kuehl "Stolen art"

12” x 18”, Acrylic and Collage, 2021

This was originally a replica painting of a peace my grandfather has at his house. When I tried to recreate it I didn't like the way that it looked. I set the painting aside and saved it for last.  When I got it back out, I still didn't like it. So I took old paintings in books, cut them out, and glued them down with  Moje Poje. The point of doing this was to cover up everything I didn't like about the painting. It's meant to look like a dinner party from the late 1890s.
