Size-1 inch tall, Media-Ceramic clay and glaze, Year-2023
I wanted to make something that I really like to eat but at the same time something that could be good kitchen decor. I got the idea from Pinterest after looking up cute home decor made from clay. After searching online and not being able to find something that really stuck out to me, I decided to just make my own idea. I kept seeing food items and so I thought I really like donuts so why don't I just make a donut? And so I did and I think it turned out great!
First I rolled a chuck of clay into a soft ball size circle. Then I flattened the bottom and the top. Then I took the end of my sculpting tool and pressed it in the middle of my donut and started to make it go into a circular motion. This is what created the hole in the donut. Then I took some new clay and rolled it until it was really flat. Then I took my sculpting knife and went around in squiggles, creating the frosting. Then I gently placed the "frosting" on top of the "donut". After that, I took little pieces of clay and rolled them to look like sprinkles and I placed them on top of the donut. I waited for it to dry before firing it. After it was done firing I glazed it and fired it again. Then just like that it's done!
I would say the most difficult thing for me was making sure the clay was thick enough but thin enough so the bottom wouldn't shatter when it was being fired. But my luck the bottom did shutter. But I just tried to work around that by sanding down the sharp shattered edges. In the end, it turned out good and you can't tell the bottom is like that unless you actually flip it over and look at it.
