Nikkie Cargill's Art Portfolio

Nikkie Cargill "Reflection"

11x14", chalk on Paper, 2022

My idea was to make a beautiful sunset and a close up dying tree. How I thought about this was I looked at many reference photos on pintrest and google then pin pointed the ideas I wanted. Looking at the pink setting sky has always been one of my favorite things to ever see. I did the background first I started at the top and worked my way down to the bottom. I used chalk pastel because I like how simply the colors blend in together. After I was done with the background I started on the tree. On the tree I used charcoal, traced the outline, drew black marks in the tree and then just blended them out with cotton balls. This artwork shows how beautiful the setting sky is beaming off the water. I want my audience to think about how the dying tree is really going through it, and giving up, but there's still beauty and positivity to look forward too. What was most difficult for me was figuring out what colors blended together the best, but also fit the theme and aesthetic I was going for. I tested colors out on another paper and saw how well they worked before I just committed. I definitely would have done the tree charcoal differently because it look messy too me but it is a sad dying tree. The style of art I made is realistic. Not many people do a pink and purple sky but when I think of a sky those are the light, and soft colors I directly go to. I love how it has a message to when there is bad, always look past to the positive.

Nikkie Cargill "The Mountians"

7x10", Graphite Pencil on Paper, 2022

My idea was to make something simple, but different. I get most of my inspiration off of pintrest. I loved how the water looked like it perfectly flowed into a completely different triangle. I used just a graphite pencil. I added simple, but lots of detail. I added shading, and used different sized, and spaced dots which added nice contrast to my artwork. This artwork shows how you can use one thing, and do such simple things, then in the end have a great art piece. I want my audience to think about how the mountains look like they have flowing grass, and how delicately the water falls. The most inconvenient thing i ran into in this process was having to make the mountains look like they have sharp edges, along with where to place the dots. How I overcame this was I did it over and over again until I liked how it came out, I just had to continuously keep trying. What I would change if I started over again, I would have probably took my time and restarted more things. The water really got on my nerves because I couldn’t figure out how to shade it, but eventually, it looked real enough to me. This art is realistic but also abstract. What makes this my art and makes it unique is that i really just eteballed and guessed what to do which makes it cool to me.
