Soul Tied
Khalief Tanner
I wanted to create a silhouette of people coming together at the center of the page. After coming up with the idea I knew that I had to create it and bring it to life. I got the idea from mine and my friend groups relationship, we are all extremely close and and "Soul Tied" almost. I started with a sketch and then painted around the outline of the silhouettes in black. After painting the background I went into painting the silhouettes themself, when they were finished I went into the center of the painting and added some white throughout it to make it look like a galaxy almost. I tried to blend the colors together in the middle, but it wasn't blending, more or less just mixing. I wanted to make something that was meaningful and unique that can tell someone how much my friends matter to me. My greatest and only struggle with this painting was trying to get the paint where the silhouettes meet to blend properly. I started to use the paint and add lines where the silhouettes are supposed to intertwine. The only thing I feel like needs changed is the middle of the silhouettes by making them shorter without mixing in the middle. The abstract style of the painting gives it a sense of individuality that makes it different from any other painting/sketch I've done before. I love the colors that I used for the painting and the way middle of the painting thats surrounding the silhouettes has a sparkly dark grey color to it.

I’ve gotten better with smaller details. Working through most of the pieces, I had tons of tiny detailing that needed to be done, including my finish-line painting. All of the intricate little pieces in the artworks I’ve done have helped me to get better at the fine line in artworks. I want to work on getting better at different types of silhouettes, along with blending colors together. Making a new color is easy, but when you’re trying to blend more than two different colors, it gets a bit hectic. I want to do more pieces later on that involve blending colors, like a sunset, and with different types of paint, like acrylic or watercolors. I'm working on how to blend colors properly and getting the right texture on certain things. I want to make a future piece that would need different textures, maybe like a brick house or something to do with water.
Whispers from the Deep

I came up with the idea for this painting after reviewing my photos and seeing it. After I saw the picture, I was immediately taken aback by the memories correlated. I wanted people to be able to see the beauty that I am so grateful I captured. Going into the project, I planned to make it more realistic, but as I worked on it, I slowly fell in love with the surrealistic look it was taking on. I used color blending to achieve the most accurate match to the original. I wanted people to look at the painting and go back to a time when they encountered and appreciated the beauty in the sea or water animals. The part that made me sit there and do it over and over was the light spots that glowed a greenish-blue. I ended up just giving up and calling it good after getting a couple of validating comments. I would start with the light spots to try to perfect them before doing the little things, so I could paint over them with my background color if I didn't like them. The thing I love most about the painting is the memory it captures. Being able to hold onto a memory that's extremely important to and the people I love has to be the best feeling I’ve gotten from this painting.

I got the idea of doing the DWMA from the painting on the canvas originally. The painting depicted an eye with a blue path leading to its center, flanked by two hourglass-shaped statues, one on each side of the path. I started by outlining it on the canvas, making a fairly detailed outline, but then ran out of time that day. The next day, I started and noticed that it wasn’t lined up properly, nor could I get it, so I restarted. The final time I worked on the outline, I decided not to put the sun in there. I had to blend the yellow and orange to make it look like it was an actual flame. The first time I blended something properly, making it look good this time. There isn’t any sort of symbolism within this painting. I wanted to paint something that was big, and it was the perfect thing. I didn’t really have much of a struggle with this painting; my biggest one was getting the building to look black, but be noticeably different from the black background. I used purples and a little bit of grey with a lot of black to make it dark. The painting I did is a surrealist painting, it's the Academy from one of my favorite anime. This piece incorporates one of the hardest things for me to do: blending colors. Making the flames for the candle was a huge challenge for me. I love that the flames came out better than I was thinking I could ever do.
Coraline

I decided to create the altered moment for my grandma because she collects precious moments herself. I made it into a Coraline doll. At the bottom, there’s a little message that says, “Locked away or ignored, I will still love you.” When I started the project, I wanted to create Emily from Corpse Bride. I started with the blue for her hair, then someone pointed out that it would be the perfect color for Coraline’s hair. This piece is being used as a Christmas present, so I wanted it to be something that would remind my grandma of me. The hardest part about making this project would be getting the back of the doll painted. I started with the doll itself first, then went to the background, covering up any of the color that came from the doll. I would make the skin tone a different shade of white, add more of an orange-ish to it to make it more of a skin tone color. I would also change the color of the shoes, make them yellow, and make the ruffles at the bottom of the dress a black color. This is a realistic piece that I did. I try my best not to do realism unless it's with animals, so it was a bit of a step out of my comfort zone. I love that the eyes came out like a perfect little button, with the little holes being close to symmetric.
