Drawing 2

Emma Huyten "The faces of AHS"

Size, Color, 2021

I knew from the beginning of the year I wanted to do at least one American horror story drawing. I found an idea similar to this on pinterest and I changed a few of the seasons to include my favorites.

When I first started this project I had to map out the symmetricality since it was made to not be symmetrical. Then I had to gather my materials and I used colored pencils. After that I used a black marker to give it a bold look. After that point it was just working on shading and blending of colors.

I wanted the drawing to symbolize the main theme from each season. Even if some people might not understand, I like that I can look at it and see the themes of the seasons in each section.

I think that the most difficult part for me is and will probably always be drawing the details on faces. Although I think I have improved from last year there are still some small things I need to work on. I also wanna work on the different colors of drawings and how to math and shade colors well.

I guess this is an abstract since there is a section of different faces fitting into one. I really like the top right section since I wasn’t completely sure how to do it but I think it turned out better than I expected.

Emma Huyten "Lana Banana"

Size, Black and White, 2021

I got the idea from one of my sketches that I had really liked. Since I was already looking for new ideas I tried to come up with how I can change it to be some character. Then I got the idea of having it be a character from the asylum season of american horror story, Lana, a reporter who was held captive after threatening to publish what really happened at the asylum.

First I worked on my sketch which I did on a small piece of paper. Then I kind of just tried to draw it the best I could on a bigger piece of paper. Once I had the base lines of it done I started to work on the fine details of the clothes on her. After I was done with the clothes I worked on the shading of the face and finally the shading and drawing of the smoke from above.

While doing this I added a few touches from my original sketch. What I want people to get the most is that when she was in the asylum she was silenced as you can see from her mouth being sewn shut. I also put in some key words of what happened to her in the asylum in the smoke, which represents her thoughts.

I think the most difficult part for me was trying to get the smoke part at the top. Even now that I am done it doesn’t really look right but I tried to fix it. It wasn’t really what I envisioned for it at the start but it came very close. It was also very hard to erase and shade without getting smudges all over and that still ended up happening.

What I really like about this painting is that I believe that I captured what really happened to Lana when she was at the asylum. I also think that this drawing is more surreal than realistic.

Emma Huyten "Colorful Faces of Women"

9x12, Mixed Media, November 15 2021

When I was thinking of an idea I had a hard time coming up with ideas for a collage. Until I thought of an idea like this and I liked the idea of having the faces be cut out and be a colorful background.

When I first thought of this idea I worked on most of it at home over the weekends since I had most of my magazines there. It took me a while to cut out the faces sense I had to draw out how it was all gonna fit together and what pictures were gonna overlap the other pictures.

I usually like the idea of artworks having beautiful meanings behind them, so for this I thought of the meaning being the fact that a woman's face doesn’t have to be everything about her there can be spirit, personality, and other things about her other than her looks.

I think that the most difficult part of doing this drawing was cutting out the faces of the pictures. It was difficult to cut the middle part of the picture so I had to fold the picture lightly and cut the picture out from the inside. Another difficult thing for me was lining everything up. To be able to make this how I wanted I had to overlap some of the pictures, so that was very difficult to figure out what to glue on first.

I think that this drawing is sort of a surreal drawing. With my drawings I like to add certain aspects that fit with the theme. I think that for this drawing the message behind it is very unnoticeable, which is what I like about it.

Emma Huyten "Thor's Hammer"

9x12, Black and white and color, November 15 2021

I usually have a hard time thinking of ideas for projects, so coming up with landscape ideas was especially difficult. Once I started to think of some landscape I have seen or been to I thought of Bryce Canyon in Utah. I went here over the summer with my family and it was easily the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen, and I knew I wanted to draw it. The main focal point of the drawing is the main rock, called Thor's hammer.

When I started this project I had to search up a picture to make sure I was getting it correctly. Since there are a lot of patterns I had to make sure it looked more identical to the actual picture.

When people look at the picture I would like them to see that the one rock in the center that is colored, is the main focus of the artwork. Since I wanted people to notice this it was hard to make that only color and the rest black and white. I especially want them to notice the main rock.

The most difficult part of this artwork for me was the shading of the black and white colors. Since the canyon has so many different shades of the one color, it was difficult to do different shades of grey. With that, it was also difficult to do the shading of the oranges since I never really found the right shade of orange

This is definitely realistic artwork. I think that putting certain aspects in drawings make it to be more to my taste, and I especially like that the main rock is the focal point.
