At first my idea was to just go with the flow because it was my first pitcher I was making. Over time I noticed it kinda looks like a Cardinal so that is how I got the name. Sense this was my first pitcher it was hard for me to get all the edges smooth. It took me al long time to get the top smooth. One class that is all I worked. After noticing it looked like a cardinal I thought of what a cardnial means to me. In my family the cardinal is a sign of a family member that has passed is watching over us. When ever I see a cardinal I think of the special memories that I had with them. So making this cardinal made me feel warm and happy thinking of those special people. One of my struggles was tht I kept on touching the piter too much so some of the designs when away I also had trouble with holes that where being created once I would fix one another one appeared. Realistic, I made a pitcher so it would be a humanitarian. I did not have a idea for this at first and like I said I just let everything fall together.
I wanted to made a starfish and a shell by themselves but then I saw some people had the same idea as me. So I wanted to do something different. So I made the starfish and seashell sitting on the beach enjoying the day. The star fish represents two people on the beach. At first I made a larger starfish and seashell then I changed my idea after seeing that others had the same idea as me so I thought of other magnets on my fridge and they all a flat surface so I made that and came up with the idea of having the star and shell sitting on the beach. When people look at my magent I want them to imagine them on the beach and enjoying the day. I want then to feel warm and peaceful inside. What was hardest was for me was the shape and the thickness of the ceramic. It was hard because I wanted it like a oval shape, and at first the magnet was too thick so I have to cut it in half so it would be thinner which resulted in it not being smooth. This is visual art an because it is like a picture you can look at.

At first I was trying to make a giraffe that was a pitcher but that was not going well. So I made the giraffe spots into bubbles under the sea. Then I made a fish, whale, and shark. This one too a week it took two classes to make the pitcher then one classes I worked on the giraffe idea but then that went out the door next class when I made the pitcher under the sea themed. So I molded the fish, whale, and shark with my hands. Then took two classes to glaze it was a work in progress. It simbolizes what you would see when you go under the sea. I got better at molding the fish and other animals under the sea it took me a few attempts but I eventually got it. It is a visual of what you would see under the sea and it is differnt from others becuase the fish and bubbles are 3dish so they pop out like the fish are swimming around.

I had no idea what to do at first. Christmas was coming up so I was thinking something for my cousin so he can put in his room. He loves sharks and dinosores do I tried to make him a shark. I came in for quest for this one because it was coming close to Thanksgiving break and I wanted to finish it. The thing that took the longest was making the teeth it took me two quest classes to do it so a hour. It was hard to get the shark smooth. I did not build it off a meaning but what I think it shows strength and determination. I got better at making the teeth realistic and adding to the shark things like fins to make it realistic. What makes it unique is that it is it has a longer neck so it looks more like a older shark.

At first I just played around with shapes and had no idea what I was doing. Then after wards it kinda gave a look to it that that the squiggle things were snakes and they were chasing each other. First to used the slab roller to make the pitchers shape. Then I used a carving tool to make the indents in the pot. Then I used my hands to make the snake like things by rolling the clay on a surface. At first while I was making it but now that I look at it, it does not have much symbolize but it looks light three snakes is trying to find the other snake in a way. Then the indents look like the soil or the ground. Putting all the indents where hard to make them look sharpe and clean. Non-objective because I have no idea what is going I here. I just thought it looked cool.
Carissa Schmidt "Seaweed"
3x3, slab roller, stencil, small sized bowel shaper, rib tool, glaze
October, 2024
I did not have much of a idea for this one I kinda just went with the flow and just tried out new things.
I used my hands mostly to smoothen things out and make it bowel like.
When I look at this piece it calms me and it makes me think of the ocean when you are scuba diving. The brown parts are the seaweed moving in the water.
What was most difficult for me is making the edges not pointy and making them round. What was also hard for me is getting my
This is a utilitarian art piece because it is a bowel and can be used to eat on.
Carissa Schmidt "Midnight Garden"
6x6, slab roller, stencil, medium sized bowel shaper, rib tool, glaze
October, 2024
This is the first bowel I made so I was just trying to figure things with this one. There was no plan I just jumped right into it.
First I used the slab roller to flatten out clay. The I used a flower stencil and used a roller to roll the sentinel onto the clay. Next, I got a medium sized bowel shaper so I could make it bowel like. Then I used the rib tool to make it smoother. I used the midnight glaze on it.
When I look at it I see it as at night how you would see a garden. The blue color is from the moon light onto the flowers.
What was most difficult for me was to get the bowel ceretrical. You can see like a dent in it because the clay was soft and caved in on me.
This is a utilitarian art peice because it is a bowel and can be used to eat on.
Carissa Schmidt "The Resting Swans"
2x3, swan mold, ribed tool, glaze, needle tool
December, 2024
This was the one I did with the molds and I was looking around for a smaller one because it was getting close to end of semester and it was easier to glaze. So I picked out this swan mold then i put wet clay like slip in the mold by poring it in and pointing it in the sink so it fills all the way in. But that did not happen... the swans came out with no neck so i had to add clay to its neck so it was filled in. Other with I got ride of the creases as I could and it went int the kilm. i glazed the swans and got it done thankfully in quest. I just picked out a mold I liked and glazed as a swan looks. By this point I was pretty good at glazing by the end of the semester. I found out after the mold but these are swan little candle holders which is super cute. Which makes it different from any other swans because they can hold candles.
Carissa Schmidt "Little Cindy Lu Who"
4x6, pottery wheel, glaze
December, 2024
This was my first bowel on the wheel so I had not idea for it at the time but I was glazing another bowl and it was Grinch themed so I decided this one could be Cindy Lu Who themed. I had some help with this one because it was my first bowel. First I got a goof amount of clay and slapped it on the wheel and while the wheel was spinning I would glide my hands on it until it was even. Then when I was smoothing out the edges there was one side that was higher than the other and I did not want to ruin my bowel so I just left it. I thought the color of the glaze reminded me of Cindy Lu Who. I believe I did pretty good with this bowel for it being my first one. Before I made this bowel I did not know how to use the wheel but by the end of it i got used to it. What is unqie about it is that one side of the bowel is higher than the other witch makes it different from the other bowels I have seen and the color is a unqie color for the bowel.
Carissa Schmidt "Mr. Grinch"
5x4, pottery wheel, glaze
December, 2024
I did not have much of a idea with this one I only came up with the Grinch part when I was putting the glaze on.
I used the wheel for this bowel. First I cut a decent amount of clay and slapped it on. It started to shape it but in the end I could not get the top of the bowel completely flat.
I named it Mr. Grinch because the un perfectness of the bowel is like the Grinch. The Grinch is a old green haired thing that hates christmas and that is what I feel this bowel represents.
I trusted the process with this one and I am happy how it turned out. It lookes so much different that I thought it was going to turn out. I think by this time to improved my glazing of the bowel and the glaze looks pretty even in this one.
I love that it looks differnt from the other things I ave seen. It is not perfect like other bowels but this shows that a bowel does not need to be perfect to look good.
