Brooke Kent Baseline Pitcher
4x5" Stoneware and glass, 2023
My idea for this piece of art was kind of complex. It took me a little while to decide what I wanted to do and decide how I wanted it to look and function. I chose this print for my pot because I love flowers and I thought this expressed it a lot. I made a smaller pitcher because I wanted it to be different and not like the others. The process of this pitcher was also complex. It took me a while to get a hang of how to use the clay and how to maneuver it. I shaped my pitcher and then added the print and then it was fired and I glazed it. To me, my artwork means more than just a pitcher. It's a functional piece of work that is very beautiful and floral and shows the growth of new life and beginnings. Something that was very difficult for me was how to shape the pitcher and how to make it look presentable. This was my first time working with clay after a long couple of year break and it seemed different to me. I would say my work of art is somewhat abstract. My pitcher definitely looks different from everyone else's but I like that.
Brooke Kent "Once Loved"
My idea for this ceramic dish was to incorporate my heart into it. I chose to do something unique and not like the rest of my ceramic pieces. I wanted this piece to be more complex and to mean something more. I used clay for my project and formed it solely upon just that. I shaped my design and made it my own. It was then fired in the kiln and then glazed over and fired again to create the final piece. My intention was to create a piece that had no use but was attractive to the eye and I immediately thought of a heart design. I wanted this artwork to resemble the heart that was put into it. Something that was difficult for me was making the perfect shape but then I realized that nothing is perfect and I can never make it 100% perfect but I can make it 100% me. I thought of this piece as abstract. It is just a simple heart but it means more than that.
Brooke Kent "Endless Swirl"
I started this piece off on the spin wheel and accidentally messed up on one of my first tries. I decided to stick with it because, in my head, this piece defines progress. It shows how my very first piece went compared to my last. I started off on the wheel a little hesitant and then opened up to the idea of new things and that is exactly why I am taking this class. I used clay, the wheel, and then later on glaze to finish it off. I intended to make a nice-looking pot and ended up making a mistake but it was a beautiful mistake. The start on the wheel was difficult but I ended up making some awesome pieces of art. I changed it with practice and I wouldn't change anything if I could because it was a great experience of growth. This art is abstract because it is different from a normal pot. It shows that flaws are okay and flaws can make great pieces.
Brooke Kent "Black Honey Bee"
Going into this piece, I had no direct idea. I wanted to create a piece that was different but still nice. I decided to use the extruder and go for this "honey pot"-looking piece. I got clay and wondered what to do for a while. I then decided to use the extruder that we were introduced to. This allowed me to make an out-of-the-box piece. I stacked the different pieces of clay on top of one another to make this metallic honey pot. I intended to make something out of the box with my resources and ended up creating this. It was difficult to line everything up right and make it as straight as possible but I ended up making it happen. This piece of art is realistic because it can be used in daily life and looks like a honey pot as it was intended to look like.
