Ashlyn Appleby " Alani Can"
1x1, clay, acrylic paint, 2025
I was told to make something that represents me and all I could think of besides running is alani since they are one of my favorite drinks. I started by wedging a small piece of clay and then cut out a rectangle chunk. I then started shaping it into a shape of a can. After I did that I used the spegiti letters to spell out alani nu. I then used a small tool to carve in the can details. After I got it back I painted it pink and silver to finish it. The hardest part was definantly painted in the small details, keeping my hands still is a struggle for me.

This was my second time ever working with clay and we were told to make a pot. So for my pot a chose the wavy cut-out because I liked the look of it. I Then picked out a pattern i liked out of the bin. I used the roller to print it into the clay and then assembled it together to make the pot. The hardest part was definitely getting the clay to hold together. I spent a lot of time making sure the handle was secure enough. I chose the glaze I did because i love the look of greek pottery and the bule that makes most think of greece. The color did not turn out quite how I wanted to but I still like the shade of blue.

I was thinking again about things that represent me and I love weiner dogs. I saw a painting of a rollerskating weiner dog. I decided to recreate it by making one flat, square slab. I then cut out the shape of a weiner dog then used slip and scratching to attach it. I cut out four shoes and then made 12 balls to be the wheels on the roller skates, I also used the slip to attach them. I made two slabs and rolled the clay into snakes, then separated the snakes into 3 sections and then braided them into a rope. With the rope i put it around the entire square. After it got fired I glazed it with an oat colored glaze. I painted the dog a brown color and the skates blue. The bule paint didn't show up after it got fired again.

I was thinking about what to make that would show my personality. I am a huge flower lover and when I saw a flower mug on pintrest it sparked my idea. I decided to make a flower cup. It is different from what the insporation was but im very happy with how it came out. I started out by making three different slabs with the slab roller. I found a picture of a flower online and traced it to make a stencil for my cup part. I used the stencil then made the base for the cup. After making the cup part I made a different flower stencil for the bottom of the cup. I Then cut around the stencil to make the bottom of the cup. I took my third slab and rolled it into a snake to make the "stem" of the flower. After attaching it all together I picked out a red, white, and green glaze. When it came out of the kiln, there was a big chunk out of the side. Mrs. Garity pointed out that it kinda looked like a flower in the side of the cup so after I finished glazing I looked at the side for a while then painted on many flowers. To get the pinkish color I layered the red and creme glaze so it would appear more pink than red. The hardest part in my opinion was getting the waves of the flower it look even, it took a lot of trial and error to get it just right.

I looked back on my vacation and I remember the little house I saw on the beach. It was very memorable for me because it was a house I always dreamed of living in. I made a slab and created four equal sized rectangles. I put them together by scratching and using slip. After putting them together I made two small rectangles and put them together to make my roof. After assembling the roof I made a small awning and put it on the front of the house. I then made a surfboard and a floatie to put on the front of the house. After it fired I started painting on the small details. I would say the hardest part was getting the windows to look right.

I didn't want to make just a basic bowl so decided to make a bowl with pastas in it. To make the bowl I used the slump drape ring. I then cut out the shapes of bowtie, marconi, and penne pasta. I used slip to put them on. After it came out of the kiln I used the yellow glaze all over the bowl and then it was finished.
