Cade Shaw "What’s the Slip"
5x2.75, Ceramic, 2021
This is a container primarily used to contain slip used in ceramic construction but can be used for other things because of the food-safe ceramic glaze. I came up with this idea by just working the clay in my hand as it became what it is now. It was a pinch pot in the beginning and stayed that way throughout. This work is used every day in class to fuse two pieces of clay together so if it were to break I wouldn’t know what to do in class. The most difficult thing about this project was the divot in the bottom but pressing in on the bottom while trying not to rip the bottom out. My own little personal touch added the little smiley face at the bottom of the piece of art.
Cade Shaw "Chips With Dip?"
9.25x1.75 4x1, Ceramic, 2021
These two pieces of work are two bowls: the small one is used to hold dip and the larger one is used for holding chips. The process of making these bowls was rolling out two slabs one smaller one larger and laying the corresponding slabs with the foam rings and pushing in on the middle to make the bowl. The feet on the borrow were installed by letting the clay dry till firm then scoring the bottom of the bowl then attaching the feet. What I want you to get out of this is that you can have a piece of art that you can use everyday but still be pretty. Although there were challenges such as not making the feet press through the bottom of the bowl. All I had to do to overcome that was press on the opposite side and cover the divots with a little slip.also when I was making these pieces I was wanting to make it look worn but also new and shiny.
Cade Shaw "Bent Vase"
8.5x2.85, Utilitarian Ceramics, 2021
This is a vase used for the storage of random household things. I started off by thinking of things I saw on my way to school and remembered the barbershop I used to go to. This led to me putting the stripes on the sides. This piece is also bent because nothing is perfect and I try to portray that in my artwork. The process of this work is that I started off by rolling a slab and cutting it into a rectangle. I then tried to make a one-end closed cylinder by taking them and putting them together on the open side on another slab of clay. Then I took two equal-length slab stripes and scored them on the outside of the vase. The only thing I want you to take from the piece is that nothing is perfect which is okay. The most difficult thing is putting the bend in without ripping the clay or the bottom coming off. My personal touch to all of my pieces is the divot at the bottom of every utilitarian piece.
Cade Shaw "The Yeller"
8.5”x5.5”, Ceramic, 2020
My piece of work is from a slab with the nose, eyes, mouth, teeth, and eyebrows formed to the slab to make a face. I got this idea from a sketch I did at the beginning of this year and I wanted it to become something instead of just a picture on a piece of paper. I started by rolling out coils and balls for all of the pieces of the face. I then used different tools to score and shape the different facial features. I believe this piece shows how you can hold in anger because of the concave face instead of the “regular” outward flex of the clay to make a face. The most difficult thing in this piece was to make the lips and teeth because of the shape and overall semi-realistic look. This piece of work is a surreal piece and my personal touch is to make it real enough that you really think about the detail.
