"Trypophobia"
Graphite on Paper, 2024
My idea for this piece was to capture different phobias and fears in art. So for my first project I decided to do trypophobia. Trypophobia is the “extreme or irrational aversion to or fear of clusters of small holes or bumps.” To start, I drew a picture of a hand with just a regular pencil, and then I went in and traced it with a graphite pencil. I used various shades of graphite pencils to make the hand. For the background, I used the darkest shade of graphite I could find and simply drew the outer/darker corners and just kept blending in with a blending stick; only adding pencil marks if I really needed to. When looking at this piece, I want the audience to think about phobias. It’s meant to represent what type of unique and not super well-known phobias that people live with. The most difficult part of this drawing for me to do was shading the hand around the holes. I couldn’t decide where I wanted the light source to be, and the holes were sort of oddly shaped to start and overall didn’t look right. I was able to just add the light source in the area of the hand that had the most room, and then I just fully darkened the holes. If I could start this over, I would definitely make the hand bigger so I could do more with it, as I feel like it’s just slightly too small. I would say this piece is more on the surreal side, while also being slightly realistic. I think since it is in black and white and more surreal it would be similar to my art style. I think what I like the most about this piece is how the background contrasts the hand, and how it goes from dark to light around the hand.
“Xanthophobia”
Graphite on Paper, 2024
My idea for this piece was to capture different phobias and fears in art. For this second project, I wanted to do a combo drawing. I decided to use Xanthophobia, which is the fear of the color yellow. To start, I planned out how exactly I wanted to incorporate the yellow into the combo drawing. I decided to use yellow paper, and then proceeded to use graphic pencil to draw the girl. I also added black around the girl. I then used yellow markers overtop of the yellow paper so that the yellow would really pop out more. When looking at this piece, I want the audience to think about phobias. It’s meant to represent what type of unique and not super well-known phobias that people live with. The most difficult part about making this piece was trying to decide how I wanted to represent the fear through the drawing. I decided to make the girl's back face the audience so it was almost like she was looking away from the yellow. If I could start over, the only thing I would change would be making it bigger, as I feel that there almost isn’t enough yellow. I think my favorite part about this piece is how the girl’s hair turned out. I think it’s probably the best hair I’ve ever drawn and I’m really proud of it. Otherwise I would have to say that I really like this piece all together.
"Thalassophobia”
Oil Pastel, 2024
My idea for this piece was to capture different phobias and fears in art. For my third project, I wanted to do a colored drawing. So, I picked the phobia, Thalassaphobia, which is the “intense phobia or fear of large or deep water.” To start, I planned out how I wanted to represent this phobia and what tools I wanted to use for it. I decided to go with a sunset, as those are some of my favorite things to make. I chose to use oil pastels for this, as it’s something that I don’t typically use. I chose to make the water portion the main focus, by making it bigger and taking up the most room on this piece. I started by creating the water, and once I was fully finished on that, I made the sun, and then the sky. When looking at this piece, I want the audience to think about phobias. It’s meant to represent what type of unique and not super well-known phobias that people live with. The most difficult part of making this piece was probably blending the colors. I think this was difficult for me since I don’t use oil pastels very often, so it took some adjusting, and going over it multiple times, but eventually I got it. If I could change anything about this piece, I would probably add some animals to the water, but other than that I really like how it turned out. I think this piece is unique to my style, solely because it’s of a sunset and those are my “go-tos'” and I always end up doing one. I really love the piece as a whole, but think my favorite part of it is the water. I think the water always somehow ends up being the best part of all my sunsets.
“Globophobia”
Magazine, 2024
My idea for this piece was to capture different phobias and fears in art. For my fourth drawing, I decided to do a collage drawing. I picked the phobia, Globophobia, which is the “extreme, overwhelming, and irrational fear of balloons. To start, I planned out how many balloons I wanted, and what color they were going to be. Then, I started by painting the background black. I then started cutting out pieces of magazine to use for the colors, and then used modge podge to glue it down. After the balloons were done, I used string to make the rope of the balloon. To finish, I put modge podge over the whole piece. When looking at this piece, I want the audience to think about phobias. It’s meant to represent what type of unique and not super well-known phobias that people live with. The most difficult part of this piece was the gluing part, and getting the pieces of the magazine to not move. I ended up using the end of two paint brushes to move the piece of magazine and to get them to stay where I wanted them to. If I could change anything about this piece, it would probably be to make the balloons more of a similar shape, as some of them look much smaller than the others. I think what makes this unique to my own style is the fact that it's made of color on a black background, and how the black makes the color pop more. My favorite part of this piece is definitely how all the balloons are either different colors or different shades. But overall I really like how this piece turned out and it’s definitely one of my favorites that I’ve done.
