"The Dancer"
9x12, construction paper, modge podge, hole punches, watercolor pencils, water, pencil, watercolor paper, pens, 2021
My idea was to make a dancer walking through some dandelions. My first idea was to make a dancer and have mean newspaper clippings come at her. And it's supposed to represent that even though people look strong they are really breaking inside. But I couldn't find any newspaper clippings that worked with my idea so instead, I made dandelions as the background. I did use some online photos to make the dancer so I had some inspiration.
My process for making the work was I first made the dancer because I knew that would take the longest time. After I drew the dancer out I first colored the hair. To color and draw the hair I used an online tutorial because I had never done something like that before. Then I started punching my hole punches for the tutu. It took 3 and ½ class periods to do it! Then I got to glue them on using modge podge. Then I used watercolor pencils to make the girl's skin and top of the tutu. I used watercolor pencils so I didn't have to go over a lot of coats and so I could get the colors that I wanted. Then I knew I needed something else so I added dandelions next to the girl to make it seem she was walking through them.
This artwork doesn't really have a meaning. I just wanted to create something that was pretty for someone to look at. My goal was to make a person not look horrible. Because the last time I drew a person it was a train wreck.
The most difficult part of this artwork probably was making her limbs not look awkward. To overcome this I had a friend help me and I also asked Mrs. Dunlavey for help. They both gave me good advice to position her limbs and know I am really happy with it. If I changed one thing about this artwork. I would have wanted to glue the dandelions before the girl so there could be more and so that it could really seem like she was walking through them.
My artwork is realistic. The artwork does have this kinda cartoony feeling to it though and I think that's my art style coming through because what I mainly draw is cartoon characters. I think what I love most about it is the dancer. I really like how she turned out. Especially her dress.
"Olivia's Forget Me, Not Flowers"
1x14, black paper, colored pencils, pencil, 2021
My idea for this project was first my favorite flower daisies. But as I went along they were not looking how I wanted them to be. So I asked Olivia what her favorite flower is and she said Forget Me Not. The flowers are easy to draw and they can be any color. I used an artwork I found online to make the glass and shade it since I had never done something like that before.
I first sketched out my idea, then I started to color it, and then I worked on the reflection and the floor. I did a lot of shading on the vase because it is supposed to look like glass. I also made a reflection type of look on the table.
I want people to look at pretty flowers. I want them to think that they should have flowers like that in their home. The most difficult thing for me was finding the flowers or shading the vase. This is because I wanted a flower that was simple and easy but also very pretty. To overcome this problem I had a friend help me out, and she picked the forget me not flower. To overcome the other problem I had Mrs. Dunlavey help me to figure out how to shade the vase. If I was to change anything I would change the table. This is because you can still see the black on it. I would try and blend it out next time or use a better pencil.
This style of art is realistic. It makes it unique to me because it still is very cartoony at the same time. One example of this is the flower middles. Instead of being yellow and smaller. I made them larger and white because I thought it looks better that way. My favorite thing about the artwork is the glass. I think it looks really realistic and I love how the stems go into the water.
"Cottage By a Lake"
8.5 x 11, Grafite, pencils, 2021
I got my idea because I love water scenes. I think they are so calming and beautiful. And I wanted to draw that for myself, and capture its beauty. I did use online art to help me for inspiration but I knew I wanted to make a water scene and I made it my own.
I first sketched out my idea then I went straight in with the details, on the cottage. Then I used graphite for the first time on the sky and river, it got everywhere and there were some mistakes. I used graphite pencils, erasers, and graphite powder to make it. One technique I used was the erasing technique to make ripples in the water and make the clouds. I wanted my audience to see a small cozy cottage on the lake.
This artwork is just simply a cottage on a lake. The most difficult part was wanting to erase stuff, and if I did there would be a big white spot in the graphite. I overcome this by trying different ways to cover up the spots. If I was to change one thing about it it would be the little dark spots in the sky and the water where I puffed out too much graphite powder.
This style of art is Realistic. The part that makes it unique to me is the little sailboat on the river. It's very simple and it's not as blended out as the rest of it, a lot like how I would draw at home. My favorite part is probably the cottage. The brinks look so good and it took me so long to make it perfect.
