Kylie Lake - "Starfish on the beach"
6x9, Watercolor and acrylic paint on canvas, 2025
The idea behind this painting was to create a happy beach with a starfish on the sand. Going to the beach is one of my favorite things, and that is why I decided to paint it for my baseline painting. I started this painting out by painting the sand with tan acrylic paint. Then I painted the water using watercolors and created light blue, dark blue, and green-hued parts of the water. Lastly, I painted the starfish using pink acrylic paint. When someone looks at this painting, I want them to feel happy and like the beach is a peaceful and fun place. The most difficult part of this painting was the starfish on the bottom right corner. It was hard for me to make each side of the star even with another. I overcame this by sketching the star over and over again until I got it right, and then painting over it with a tiny paintbrush. Then I used the same tiny paintbrush to create the dotted detailing within the star. This painting is realistic, and it is unique because the water has many different colors all blended together. I love how it has bright colors, which makes it happy to look at.
Kylie Lake - "Starfish on the beach pt. 2"
6x6, Watercolor and acrylic paint on canvas, 2026
For this painting the idea was to recreate my baseline painting from the beginning of the semester and make improvements. I evolved this painting by adding more detailing in the water as well as the starfish, I decided to fully outline the starfish this time. I was initially inspired to create a painting of the beach because going to the beach is one of my favorite things. I do not do it super often however it is always very special. I started this painting by outlining everything lightly with a pencil. I then painted in the water using watercolors. I used shades of blue and green to create an ocean effect. Next I used acrylic paint so I could paint the sand and lastly I painted the starfish in the corner using light pink paint, then adding details using hot pink paint. This is supposed to be a happy painting where anyone who may view it can have a sense of joy and happiness. In this painting there isnt necessarily and symbolic imagery other than it being a replica of my first baseline painting that I created this semester. The most difficult part of this painting was drawing, painting in, and adding details to the starfish in the corner of the painting. This was hard for me because a star is a very hard shape to draw and it also has very small details. I overcame this by using a very small paint brush. If I were to start this painting over I would not change anything. I would say that this painting is realistic, it makes it my own personal style because of the many different colors within the water. I love this painting and I think that it definitely is better compared to my baseline painting.
Kylie Lake - "Beach Sunset"
8x10, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2025
I decided to paint this picture because it was a picture I took at my grandma's house in Florida. This place has a lot of memories for me, my family, and I go there every spring break. My idea behind this painting was to bring the picture that I took to life. For this painting, I used acrylic paint on an 8x10 canvas. I started by painting the sky, then the water, and then the reflection below. I used many different paint brushes to blend the colors of the sunset together. The orange warm color, and the blue dark colors show that the sky is fading from day to night. For me, this is a happy painting that brings back a lot of fun memories for me. For me, the most difficult part of this painting was making the shadow of the sky on the sand. It was hard to show that it was sand, while also reflecting the sky. I overcame this by blending the colors together a lot until they did not look seperate but instead looked like they flowed together. If I were to start this painting over, I would paint the sky and the reflection of the sky at the same time so that I could make them look as similar as possible. This artwork is realistic, and it is unique to my own personal style because it resembles a place that is meaningful to me, and that is also something that I love about this painting
Kylie Lake - "Best friends"
8x10, Acrylic paint and paint markers on canvas, 2025
This painting is a portrait of me and one of my best friends posing in front of a brick wall. I got this idea because I wanted to paint a portrait as one of my paintings for the semester. I started this painting out by using transfer paper to sketch out the image onto the canvas. After that I then got started on the brick background. I painted all different colors of brick onto the canvas and then I went over it with black paint marker to define the shape of the bricks. I then painted in the skin tone of me and my friend, the clothing, and our hair. Finally I outlined our hands and fingers with a darker shade of tan to make sure the hands stood out. When a viewer looks at this painting I want it to give off happy vibes and look like a positive painting. This picture was taken on a warm summer day, therefore I resinate good memories with it. The most difficult part of this painting was knowing how to paint the hands. I wanted them to be visible but not stand out too much. I overcame this struggle by outlining the hands and then going over it with water to soften the color and make it blend into the rest of our bodies. If i were to restart this painting I dont think that I would change much, however I would add more dimension to the hair so that it was not just one solid color. The style of this painting is abstract because the faces are not drawn in and it is just a blank head. This makes it unique to my personal style because it leaves the viewer curious as to what the face features may be. I love how this painting shows us being happy and spending time together, it was a lot of fun for me to paint and I really enjoyed painting a portrait as its not something I usually choose to paint.
Kylie Lake - "Pink clouds"
6x6, Acrylic paint and paint markers on canvas, 2026
This was my baseline painting for the class Painting 2. My idea was to create a 3D heart with arrows going through it and a background of pink ombre and clouds. I created this idea by looking through inspiration pictures online and combining multiple of them together. This painting did not have inspiration from life experiences and was more so about just painting something fun and bright. First, I used acrylic paint to make an ombre background behind the heart. After this dried, I painetd white hearts also with acrylic paint. Next, I used paint markers to draw a heart and try to give it dimension, and I also used a green paint marker to create an arrow shooting through the heart. The techniques I used was blending and tracing a heart shape. The artwork is meant to show signs of love and happiness. When an audience looks at this painting I hope for them to feel uplifted. There is not any symbolic imagery in this artwork. The most difficult part of this painting was just to originally find the idea, I wanted to paint something heart related because when I made this painting it was valentines day. I overcame this struggle buy using a couple of different inspiration pictures and combined them all together to create this piece of art. If i were to restart this painting I would do a better job of centering the heart in the middle of the painting. The style of this art is abstract, this is because its not realistic and there would not be a heart floating in the clouds in real life. It is unique to my personal style because I created the idea on my own. I love how it is bright, colorful, and happy because I feel these characteristics of the painting describe me and what I was aiming for well.
Kylie Lake - "Pink Clouds pt. 2"
6x6, Acrylic paint and paint markers on canvas, 2026
This painting is my finshline painting for the class Painting 2. My idea behind this painting was to recreate my baseline but to make it better. I knew I wasnt a big fan of the heart I did on the baseline, so I decided to make it simpler and instead do figurines of birds flying in the sky and I really like the way it turned out. I first started this painting by doing a pink and white ombre using acrylic paint. Once this background was dried, I used white acrylic paint and I made clouds in the sky. The final step in the creation of this painting was to use a black paint marker and I made V shaped to mimic bird figurines flying in the sky. The tecqniques I used was dabbing when I made the clouds, I tried to make them look light and airy instead of super solid by dabbing the paint brush onto the canvas. When an audience looks at this painting I want them to feel at peace. There is no symbolic imagery in this work, except for the painting just having a happy feel to it. The most difficult part of this painting was simply just creating the idea on what I wanted to paint. I knew I wanted to recreate my baseline however I also wanted to make changes and create something different. I wasnt a big fan of the heart I used for my baseline so I scratched that, I decided to keep the background and clouds for similarities. I also decided to flip the ombre, so instead of light at the top fading to dark, for this painting I did darker pink at the top, fading to very light pink at the bottom. I finally decided to do birds because they were very simple, yet still added some contrast and pop to the painting. If I were to restart this painting I would maybe have made all of the birds together, so it looked as if they were flying in a flock. The style of this artwork is abstract because there would never be a pink sky in real life. It is unique to my personal style because I did not use inspiration pictures and brainstormed this design myself. I love that this painting is pink because it is my favorite color, I also love how simple it is because it is easy to look at yet still enjoyable.
Kylie Lake - "Sunshine"
8x10, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2026
This was my first choice painting of the semester. I decided to paint the sun in honor of my grandma, whom we called "Grandma Sunshine." I knew that I wanted to make this painting after her, and I brainstormed many different ideas to paint a sun, and decided on this one because I also wanted to include the sun, as she loved going to the beach. This painting was based on life experiences and ideas I strung together, rather than another piece of art. I started this painting by tracing and putting tape in between each sun ray and around the sun. I also put tape on the water to create a straight line. Next, I used acrylic paint to paint the ocean water, sun, and each sun ray, blending the colors together with a paintbrush and water. This artwork was used as my Identity painting of the semester, as it is in honor of my grandma, whom we called Grandma Sunshine because she was always so happy and bright. When an audience looks at this painting, I want them to feel uplifted and happy. There isn't any symbolic imagery in the work that you could identify without knowing background information. The most difficult part of this painting for me was creating the sun rays and being able to have the colors blend seamlessly. I overcame this struggle by putting globs of paint on my brush and blending before the paint had time to dry. If I restarted this painting, I would not change anything. The style of this artwork is abstract because it is not realistic, but it is bright and has fun colors. It is unique to my personal style because it has relations to my family members. I love how bright and colorful this painting is as it represents my Grandma Sunshine very well.
Kylie Lake - "Starfish in the water"
11x14, Acrylic paint, paint markers and chalk pencil on canvas, 2026
My original idea behind this painting was to create a black and white starfish, as the assignment was to create a black and white animal. I knew that I wanted to paint a starfish because I have always been drawn to the ocean and a starfish is one of my very favorite animals. I got the idea to paint the background with bubbles, and a blue gradient because I felt it emphasized the ocean vibes within the painting. I did not get this idea from any other artwork, and it was drawn to me because of how much I have always loved starfish and the ocean. The first step in creating this painting, was sketching a grid and sketching out the outline and details of the starfish using a pencil. Next, I used a small paintbrush to paint the starfish with black paint. After I had painted a majority of the details with black paint, I went in with a chalk pencil and blended out the lighter details using my fingertip. After the starfish was finished, I used different shades of blue paint to create a gradient background. I started with dark blue paint on the bottom, and faded to light blue paint at the top. Once this gradient was dry, I used a white paint marker and different sized circular stencils to draw bubbles all around the starfish and added a highlight in the corner of each bubble as well. This artwork is supposed to be used as my social issue painting for the semester, as starfish are often harmed in the ocean due to people using the ocean to dispose of waste. When someone looks at this painting, I hope for them to feel happy, as the ocean is a very cool environment. Starfish are a very unique species, and the background going along with this species is bright and bubbly, which is meant to uplift the audience. The most difficult part of this painting, was sketching out the starfish, it was difficult to get the details right and make sure each leg of the starfish was even. I overcame my struggles by using a grid to space out each part of the starfish equally and being able to sketch out little parts at a time so it did not get overwhelming. If I could restart this painting, I would have painting the blue gradient background before I painted the starfish, this would have made it easier as I would not have to work around the starfish while painting the background. This artwork style is abstract, as a black and white starfish does not actually exist in real life. It is my own personal style, because the black and white starfish reflects a social issue, whilst the colorful blue background with bubbles shows how the ocean is a happy place to be. I love this painting because the black and white starfish contrasts well with the blue gradient background. It is a fun painting to look at and it definitely catches the viewers eye.
Kylie Lake - "Flowers in a mason jar"
8x10, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2026
This painting was my final choice painting for the semester. My idea behind this was to show a life lesson by painting flowers in a mason jar. This shows how people grow, and change throughout the course of their life. I got this idea by researching different paintings and after seeing many flower paintings, I decided to replicate my own flower painting with a pink background, and the flowers in a teal mason jar. My first step in creating this painting was painting the background pink, and then I used transfer paper to sketch on the flowers and the outline of the jar. I then painted the flowers with acrylic paint, lastly I used a paint marker to draw the stems of the flowers and add white highlights onto the jar. I used techniques of tracing, and using various brushstrokes. The meaning behind this artwork is to show how living things grow throughout their life into beautiful things. When an audience looks at this painting I want them to feel happy and uplifted. The symbolic imagery in the work is to show the way things change overtime. The most difficult part of this painting was that when I used the transfer paper, there were a few dark smudges on the pink background, I overcame this my trying my very best to remake the pink color and I repainted the background using a thin brush working around the flowers. If I were to restart I would have made sure to be more careful with the transfer paper so that I wouldnt have had to repaint the background. In the end, I am very happy with the way this painting turned out. The style of this artwork is surreal because it is not fully realistic, but also not super unlikely. This painting is unique to my own personal style because I chose for it to have very bright colors and it catches the eye very well. I love this painting because it has a variety of different colors and also has a good message behind it, which is how flowers grow and change overtime.
