Alexia Block "Desert View"
8"x10", Acrylic and Watercolor on Paper, 2022
One thing I love is beautiful architecture, so I wanted to paint something that captured a desert and a deep arched window. I first started painting the desert setting with watercolor. Then, I went in with different shades of brown for the window to give it some texture. I want the audience to not only engage in the desert but the architecture as well. The one thing I struggled with in the process was mastering the texture but after trying different techniques, I found stippling worked best. I like to think that this painting resembles a few of my interests, beautiful deserts/cacti and architecture.
Alexia Block "Jaguar"
8"x10", Graphite on Paper, 2022
My idea for this project was to draw one of my favorite things, and big cats are one of them. I really wanted to put a lot of detail into this and I am proud of how it turned out. I started by sketching the outline of the jaguar and then started using pencils and bending sticks to achieve the detail I did. I want my audience to see this and really pay attention to all the detail put in. With that being said, this artwork is realistic. My favorite thing about the jaguar is the eyes and how real they look.
Alexia Block "Wheat Field After The Storm"
8”x10”, Acrylic Paint on Canvas, 2021
My idea for this project was to really show how beautiful and flowy the field is with the sky in the background after a storm. I always see fields with beautiful colors so that inspired me to create this. I started this project by painting the sky and I struggled with the sky because I didn’t know how I wanted it to look but after working with it, I finally liked how it turned out. I then painted the green in the background to resemble trees in the distance. Lastly, I started painting the field with browns, reds, and greens and then added white and cream colors for the wheat. This artwork really shows the beauty of nature—even after a storm. The thing that was the most difficult for me was painting the wheat because it looked very sharp and choppy which was the opposite of what I was going for. I started using my finger to blend in some of the wheat. This artwork is realism and that is usually the only type of art I create. The one thing I love most about my painting is how flowy the field is.
Alexia Block “Perri”
8” x 12”, Graphite on Paper, 2021
When I was a Sophomore, I drew a portrait of my niece, Bella. I felt really good about the portrait when I finished it which made me want to draw another portrait of my other niece, Perri. I first started by making a basic sketch of Perri and then made lots of small details with a thin pencil after that, I took my blending sticks and gave the portrait some contrast. This portrait means a lot to me because it’s my niece and I will keep it forever. The most difficult part of this portrait was drawing the bow because I’ve never drawn a bow before and trying to get the texture and shadows just right was tricky. The style of this artwork is very realistic due to the amount of detail. I always take my time when it comes to the details because that will get others' attention. My favorite part of the portrait is the eyes.
Alexia Block “Aries”
8” x 12”, Colored Pencil on Paper, 2021
I got this idea because my zodiac sign is Aries and the animal for Aries is a ram and I’ve always wanted to draw an animal with the meaning behind it rather than just your average animal drawing. I first started by making a basic sketch of the ram and then made some little details with a pencil, then started using colored pencils to add color. I thought I was gonna be done after that but I knew there needed to be more so I added an ombre sky in the background and traced everything with a black sharpie to make everything stand out. I really want the audience to see the details in the ram and the blending skills. The most challenging part was the shading and blending on the ram but once I got the hang of it, I got better. If I were to change something if I started over, I would add more to it like a collage or something. I would say this work of art is realistic because of the details and that is what I focus on the most in my artwork.
