Jack Wilken, "Isle of the Swampfolk"

8"x10", Pencil, 2021

My goal was to make a story with a picture. I wanted to be able to put details on the page and have the reader be able to infer what's going on. I used a mechanical pencil and an eraser. For the water, I would sketch over it and then use my finger to smudge and smear the lead around. The most difficult part to me was probably creating the bark on the trees. It took me a lot of tries and some time to figure out how I wanted to do the trees. I'd definitely say this is a narrative art piece. I'd say it's uniquely my style because it's similar to my other pieces which also tend to be detailed landscapes.
