Marlee Kitchen, A Night In Lights, Charcoal, (In-Progress) 2026
This artwork is still in progress and is based on a group photo with my cousins. I wanted to focus on the emotions and expressions of each person instead of making it look realistically cartoonish. I took a photo from my camera roll and took it to Befunky, where I added the filter, making it cartoonish. I used shading and contrast to make the faces stand out and to practice creating depth with a pencil. Some parts are more detailed than others because I am still working on the piece and adding more value and texture as I go. The unfinished background and lighter areas show my process and how the artwork is developing over time. While creating this piece, I experimented with different shading techniques and facial proportions to make the drawing more expressive. Since the artwork is unfinished, I am still deciding how much detail to add to the background and clothing. This project has helped me improve my blending skills and better understand how lighting affects the overall mood of a drawing. Even though my drawing hasn't been finished over the course of the semester, I am very proud of the work that I have accomplished so far. There is something very fulfilling about working so hard at something, even if you don't finish the whole thing.
Marlee Kitchen, Pot and Scat, Chalk pastel, 2026
For this piece, the assignment was to draw the objects displayed on. a table in front of us. We were tasked with drawing said jars from the perspective that we viewed them from. First, I sketched out the jars, making sure that everything was placed just the way that I wanted it to be. Then, I created the waved lines that give a little bit of body and shape to the drawing. The waved lines create. the checkered like design all acorss the page, giving the art more depth. After all of the lines were complete, I then started to use some chalk pastels to give the piece of art more color and make it interesting. I tried to be very statigic about where I placed each color. I didn't want a clump of the same color in one area, so I made sure to spread each color it's own moment. One thing I enjoyed about this project was the simplicity of it, this was a very easy project to complete and it was a lot of fun. One thing that I struggled with was the smearing that happened with the chalk pastels. The pastels were smearing everywhere, all over the paper, all over me. It was really frustrating, but I made it work.
