The Toronto Chinese Canadian Welfare Association (CCWA) was established in 1953 by first generation immigrants from China including Hong Kong for the purpose of:
- Uniting the residents of Toronto who are Canadian of Chinese descent
- Preserving and perpetuating the traditions of Chinese Culture (e.g. joint celebration of Chinese New Year, and other festivals)
-Promoting interests and welfare of members and provide assistance whenever necessary (e.g. free English tutoring, interpretation, assistance with tax returns etc.)
-Sponsoring entertainment, recreational, educational and cultural events for the promotion of Chinese heritage & adaptation to the Canadian culture (e.g. Celebration of Canada Day)
-Promoting friendship among members and between Chinese and Canadian people.
CCWA is a non-profit organization incorporated in Ontario. All functions are carried out under the direction of 9 Executives, elected by members once every three years according to CCWA's constitution. The present Executives were elected in September, 2022.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemics, most CCWA functions, such as annual general meetings, quarterly dinners and lunches, weekly gatherings, outings and line dances were either stopped or replaced by virtual gatherings. CCWA maintains regular communication with members with a weekly Zoom session, newsletters and emails. It is hope that when the situation returns to normal, CCWA will resume many past in-person activities to minimize the isolation many of our senior members endured since the pandemics.
As CCWA reaches its 70th year, it faces many challenges including an aging membership and the need to attract younger generation, mainly off-springs from our many founding members, to maintain the friendship among members.
