macOS has a powerful built-in screenshot tool that gives you total control.
The "Everything" Shortcut: Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5
What it does: This opens the on-screen screenshot menu. From here, you can choose to capture the entire screen, a specific window, or a custom selected portion. It even lets you record video of your screen!
The Quick Snippet: Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4
What it does: Your cursor turns into a crosshair. Click and drag over the exact area you want to capture.
The Whole Screen: Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 3
What it does: Instantly captures your entire screen.
Where does it go? By default, Mac saves screenshots directly to your Desktop as .png files. Pro-Tip: Hold the Control key down while taking any screenshot to copy it to your clipboard instead of saving it as a file.
Windows offers a few ways to capture your screen, but the modern Snipping Tool is by far the most versatile.
The Ultimate Shortcut: Press Windows Logo Key + Shift + S
What it does: Your screen will dim, and a small menu will appear at the top. You can choose a rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip. Click and drag over what you want.
The Dedicated Key: Press the Print Screen (or PrtScn) key.
What it does: Depending on your Windows settings, this will either open the Snipping Tool menu or copy your entire screen to your clipboard so you can paste (Ctrl + V) it into a chat or document.
Instant Save: Press Windows Logo Key + Print Screen
What it does: Captures the whole screen and automatically saves it.
Where does it go? If you use Windows + Shift + S, the snip is copied to your clipboard, and a notification pops up. Click that notification to edit or save it. If you use Windows + Print Screen, the file is automatically saved to your Pictures > Screenshots folder.
