Frequently Used ELA Online Resources
ReadWorks in an online text collection. Students may be assigned articles from ReadWorks to build background knowledge or to practice a particular skill.
Check out Epic for fiction and nonfiction books, graphic novels, and audio books. This resource will be used for class reading and can also be used for choice reading.
Freckle is an online learning platform that allows students to practice Math and English Language Arts at their own level. We will be using Freckle primarily for Word Work, but students many access a variety of ELA and math activities through Freckle.

Reading Expectations
Students will be able to:
- Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
- Provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments
- Determine a theme or central idea of a text and explain how it is conveyed through particular details
- Analyze how the structure of a text contributes to the meaning of the text
- Compare and contrast the experience of reading a text to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text
- Integrate information presented in different media or formats including text to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue
Writing Expectations
Students will be able to:
- Write narratives that have tension resolution, and realistic characters and conveyed an idea or lesson
- Write arguments to support positions with clear reasons, a variety of trustworthy sources, and relevant evidence while also building his/her arguments to a conclusion
- Write informative/explanatory pieces to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, information, incorporating essays, explanations, stories, and /or procedural passages
- Organize writing into a sequence of separate sections including an introduction and conclusion paragraph
- Use a variety of information from trusted sources and applies analysis to show relevance and connections
- Develop realistic characters and develops the details, action, dialogue, and internal thinking that contributed to the deeper meaning of the story
- Write a paragraph that supports one main idea using a lead/topic sentence, relevant evidence, analysis, and a concluding sentence
- Write routinely for a variety of tasks, purposes, and durations

Provide an objective summary of the text
Analyze the interactions between textual elements, individuals, events, and ideas in a literary or informational text
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings
Analyze the impact of a specific word choice or rhythm on meaning and tone. 7.4
