Katie Vanderlan- Kindergarten
A majority of my grades in kindergarten are based upon observation and informal screening. Math observations are made while following NYS standards and using NYS Math Modules. Observations are made during daily whole group math , math centers and completion of work in the classroom. For ELA I will be using Amplify CKLA Skills and Read Aloud, as well as daily ELA centers. I will administer assessments through the curriculum, as well as oral and written work. I will administer weekly Kindergarten word tests, observe progress and evaluate class work.
Every five weeks, students will be screened based upon the NYS standards and report card rubric. I use a checklist to assess skills such as letter/sounds, segmenting, blending, rhyming, oral counting, number recognition, etc. I will maintain the checklists to assist me in completing report cards. This data, along with interim assessments will help drive my instruction.
In addition, the Kindergartners will have a Universal Screening component administered three times a year for ELA and Math. Their progress will also be tracked through reading and Math apps which are aligned with the screening. This helps to determine those who are in need of additional assistance, under the Response to Intervention plan. I will progress monitor students and provide intervention in the classroom according to the RTI plan.
Social skills are also very important in kindergarten. In addition to informal observation of students' daily behaviors with peers, twice a year, students are rated on a social emotional skill screener. This helps add support for students who are struggling socially.
