GUIDANCE/DISCIPLINE POLICY
The goal of guidance and discipline should be to help children develop self-control, self-direction and self-esteem. In a early childhood learning setting, three aspects of the environment greatly influence how children behave. These are the physical space, the activities provided and the expectations set by adults.
Staff must use acceptable techniques and approaches to help children solve problems. These techniques include, but are not limited to:
Redirecting the child to an alternative activity.
Rewarding acceptable behavior.
Encouraging children to talk about their feelings.
Model acceptable behavior for children by speaking and interacting with children in a positive manner.
Tell children what they can do instead of what they can’t do.
Protect and preserve children’s feelings that they are lovable and capable.
Offer children choices only when you are willing to abide by their decisions.
Work with children instead of against them.
Give children safe limits they can understand.
As a last resort, children may be removed briefly from the group when the child’s behavior results in, or is likely to result in, harm to self, others, property or serious group disruption. The child will be supervised by a staff member during the separation and will be counseled on appropriate behavior in the classroom.
Copenhagen Central School reserves the right to require a child be withdrawn without a notice period if the child’s behavior is determined to be detrimental to the program, or if the health and safety of other children are jeopardized. Dis-enrollment may culminate only after all appropriate communication channels with the family have been used.
